The iron bed was equipped with an automatic lifting and reversing mechanism. With a slight motor hum, Lu Mingfei and the bed were lifted upright.

“You don’t need to tie me up like this. I can’t move even if you don’t tie me up.” Lu Mingfei tried his best not to cry.

Previously, only his legs were numb, but now he has lost sensation from the waist down. He doesn’t know if it’s because of the injection Giovanni gave him or because he has used up his remaining life force again.

“I have no leverage left to persuade the committee about their demands. You’ve killed so many people, and in the blink of an eye, no one knows who to hold accountable. You’re still the same devil.”

“Can I still call you Dad? Or Secretary-General Lu?” Lu Mingfei asked.

“Do as you please. I’m not like your mother. Women are emotional creatures; they can go crazy when they get carried away. You inherited that from her,” Lu Lincheng said calmly.

“You’ve always known, haven’t you?” Lu Mingfei said softly. “That’s why I was sent to Cassel College. I am a weapon, a weapon to slay dragons.”

“No, you’re overthinking it. When you were little, we were more worried that you were a child with no talent whatsoever, unlike me and Winnie’s child,” Lu Lincheng said. “The one who truly recognized your talent was Hilbert Jean Angers, Anjou. He used you as a weapon to slay dragons. That guy only lived for revenge, and anyone was a weapon to him, including himself.”

Do you love your mother more, or do you love your career, like this safe haven, even more?

“Winnie and I both love our careers more. Our marriage is about two people working on the same thing. Because we’ve been together for so long, we accidentally sparked a romance. Your birth changed everything; otherwise, it would have just been a fleeting passion.”

“What about Natasha? What is she?”

“Children don’t need to understand everything about adults.”

“I’ve grown up without you knowing,” Lu Mingfei said coldly. “A lover? Or a toy? I guess you weren’t living with mother before I entered this safe haven, were you?”

“Remember what I told you? In my initial plan, this was humanity’s last refuge and a new Eden. The population ratio was supposed to be one man of reproductive age with ten women of reproductive age. The strongest couples would combine to produce the strongest offspring, and then we could try new combinations. But the committee rejected it. They were worried it would cause the collapse of the social structure.” Lu Lincheng said casually, “Winnie is the most important woman to me, but not the only one. When you’re not around, Winnie and I don’t have to pretend to be an ordinary couple at the research institute. It just so happens that the committee sent Natasha to monitor me. Sending a woman like that here was intentional.”

“Is this really my dad? An S-class hybrid and a playboy. I thought you would actually have trouble quitting smoking. Now that I think about it, you probably never quit smoking at all. The whole thing you and Mom put on in front of me was just a lie.”

“Not entirely. It was also to avoid arousing suspicion from the research institute. That institute has a lot of ancient civilization data related to dragons, and your mother and I spent a long time deciphering it.” Lu Lincheng flicked his cigarette ash. “During that time, I was also happy to act like a real ordinary man with a family, someone who could truly settle down and live a peaceful life. When you were in elementary school, you were often bullied by kids from powerful families. Sometimes I would get really angry and want to go out and smash their fathers’ heads in. If you had that kind of father growing up, wouldn’t you feel happier?”

“So my mom isn’t the type to argue with vegetable vendors over a little money for groceries, right?”

“Of course not. Among our generation of mixed-race individuals, your mother was as dazzling as a phoenix. Half of the students at Cassel College wanted to date her, and after I won her over, half the college wanted to beat me to a pulp. She wasn’t a fighter, but she was the best academically, bold yet meticulous in action, the most outstanding agent, loved racing and rock music, and was a key member of the rowing team, helping Cassel College win four friendly matches against the University of Chicago. Traditionally, we wouldn’t send athletes with exceptional physical talent because that would be too unfair,” Lu Lincheng said. “Remember when your mother and I occasionally went abroad for meetings? A luxury sports car would pick her up as soon as we landed. She would drink brandy in Budapest, dance the tango in 12-centimeter high heels, and come home wearing a 20-yuan dress from a street stall, plastic slippers, watching you do your homework.”

His voice was deep and rhythmic, and he spoke with a light touch, yet the scene seemed to be right before his eyes. Lu Mingfei remained silent for a moment, and once again, tears silently streamed down his face.

He was born into “The Truman Show,” growing up in obscurity. His seemingly powerful parents concealed their true intentions, pretending to be working-class, while he indulged in a daydream, claiming to have a secret past and a mission to save the world. But now, he longed for the fake Lu Lincheng, the unsuccessful researcher who quietly saved his overseas allowance so his child could buy a house for their wedding. In that dream where he was looked down upon, he seemed a little happier.

“When your mother was young, she was a bit like Chen Motong, the girl you like, but even more mischievous,” Lu Lincheng added.

“I want to see my mother,” Lu Mingfei said.

“I know you won’t believe me just because I say a few words.” Lu Lincheng grabbed the remote control from the side, pressed the button, and the large screen on the wall lit up.

Lu Lincheng sat on the ground under the screen, his shirt collar loosely open, smoking a cigarette, with cigarette butts scattered around him.

He was unshaven, with greasy hair, and looked frighteningly thin, disheveled, and destitute, yet he possessed a unique charm; this was probably his true appearance.

The screen showed another ward. Giovanni lay quietly in bed, a stark contrast to Lu Mingfei’s room, which was bustling with activity. Medical staff were constantly moving in and out, and three to five people were always around her bedside. Giovanni’s face was deathly pale, and like Lu Mingfei, she was covered in electrodes and IV lines. Her eyes were closed, her long eyelashes resembling the wings of a fledgling bird.

The monitor beside her showed a steady heartbeat and breathing, but her blood pressure was very low. It was easy to imagine that if it weren’t for the complex life support system protecting her, she would have stopped breathing at any moment.

“Are you relieved? She will receive the best care, but waking her up won’t be easy. The medical team just said they will do their best,” Lu Lincheng said.

“Not yet,” Lu Mingfei said coldly. “Make everyone in Mom’s hospital room pinch their right ear with their left hand and turn to face the camera.”

Lu Lincheng was taken aback.
