The doctor wore a white uniform while the nurses wore green uniforms. His attending physician wore a mask, but his piercing, iron-gray eyes were visible, suggesting he was German.

“Where am I?” Lu Mingfei asked softly. “Am I dreaming?”

“You’re awake now,” Giovanni said softly, “but explaining where this is will take a while, so leave it to your dad. Get a good night’s sleep, and I’ll take you to see him tomorrow morning.”

“I can’t feel my legs,” Lu Mingfei said.

Although all my muscles were sore and weak, they were still sensitive and responsive. My legs, however, were different; they were as stiff as rotten wood.

“You’ve been walking in the snow for too long, and your legs are severely frostbitten. There are signs of necrosis in your blood vessels and muscles. But they will try to save your legs. Here, even if you were born without legs, they will find a way to make them grow back.”

“So there really was that blizzard, right?” Only now did Lu Mingfei realize that he couldn’t distinguish between reality and dreams.

“Yes, we did give you a signpost, but you strayed off course, and it took the sled a long time to find you.” Giovanni kissed him on the forehead. “Sleep well, don’t worry about anything, you’re home now. Mom will watch over you, she won’t leave your side for a moment. Even if some dragon king or something tries to break in and take you away, Mom will kill it and won’t let it disturb your rest.”

“Mom, I don’t remember you being such a good fighter…” Lu Mingfei’s consciousness gradually blurred; the muscle relaxant must have contained some hypnotic drugs.

“You remember correctly, Mom can’t fight, but Mom has missiles,” Giovanni said with a light laugh.

Giovanni pushed the wheelchair through the long corridor. Lu Mingfei was sitting in the wheelchair. There were windows on both sides of the corridor, and a sharp wind could be heard outside the windows, but there was an opaque shield outside the windows, so Lu Mingfei could not see what was happening outside.
This was the real feeling: the biting wind, the end of the world. Thinking back to that strange dream, which I once thought was so real I couldn’t find fault with it, now seems so unreal.

Giovanni stopped in front of the door at the end of the corridor, patted his head, and said, “Your dad is waiting for you inside, so I won’t go in. Boys grow up, and they should talk to their dads about important things in life. They can come to their moms’ house to cry sometimes.”

To Lu Mingfei’s surprise, Giovanni had already opened the door, brought the wheelchair into the office, and then turned and left with a cold face.

This was a Bauhaus-style office—simple, practical, and sparsely decorated. Half a wall was occupied by screens of various sizes, displaying data and graphs that Lu Mingfei coudn’t understand. The large desk was piled high with documents, and the man is encrossed in writing and drawing among them, just as he always has. Red and blue pencils were scattered across the desk; it’s not that he doesn’t know how to use a computer, but he still prefers to write and draw by hand when he’s thinking. He keeps reporting various parameters, presumably building a mathematical model, while his assistant, a young woman in a white shirt and pencil skirt, sits at the keyboard, helping him with data entry and modeling.

Hearing the door open, the man looked up and craned his neck, his gaze passing over the stacks of papers of varying heights to meet Lu Mingfei’s. His hair was graying, he wore thick-rimmed glasses, and his eyes were lined with wrinkles, but he still possessed a refined and scholarly air.

Unlike what he saw in dream, this man wasn’t some down-on-his-luck intellectual trying to save his occasional overseas allowance to buy a house for his son. Who knew his wife wasn’t a good cook but didn’t dare say so, so he brought back half a braised duck under the guise of an extra meal… Although this man was unkempt, he looked like a high-ranking intellectual who had long held a position of authority, exuding a subtle air of authority.

On the contrary, the guy in his dream was more like Lu Lincheng in his memory.

The father and son made eye contact for a few seconds before looking away tacitly. Lu Mingfei then wheeled himself to the sofa designated for guests.

“Natasha, please give us some time to talk alone,” Lu Lincheng said. “I haven’t seen my precious son for almost ten years, and I think he has many, many questions to ask.”

His assistant immediately got up and left; she was well-proportioned with a slender waist that could be encircled by one hand. Lu Mingfei immediately guessed that perhaps this graceful assistant calculator had displeased his mother, which was why she had a dark expression and was unwilling to join the family conversation.

“Have you learned to drink yet? Graduates of Cassel College should all have a drink, right? Scotch whiskey? Or a strong vodka?” Lu Lincheng got up and wandered around the office, finding a bottle and a glass in the corner.

“Vodka, preferably ice-cold. A little alcohol will make me speak more clearly.”

Lu Lincheng walked to the sofa and handed a wine glass to Lu Mingfei. “Students of Anjou all have this kind of bad habit!” The father and son drank in silence. After Lu Mingfei finished his drink, Lu Lincheng poured him another. Lu Lincheng also drink, and the two of them drink one glass after another, as if they were competing to see who could hold their liquor. Soon, the bottle of vodka was almost empty.
