Dragon Raja 5

Lu Mingfei turned his head to look back. Old Bunin should now be called Alexander Bunin, because he is the only Bunin left in the world. He was wrapped in a thick military cotton-padded coat and sat by the window, while on the other side of the window, Zero and Su Enxi were sleeping head to head.

The people on this boat all have their own ulterior motives, yet they seem to be in perfect harmony, almost as close as a family.

“We still have a long way to go,” Bunin said in a low voice.

They had already left City 023, and Bunin had been giving directions the whole way. Their destination was undoubtedly the place Lu Mingfei wanted to go.

“Do you think this guy really knows the way? We look like we’re just running around wildly in the snow,” Lu Mingfei muttered, tossing Finger on the dashboard.

Bunin got up and went to the cockpit, raising his military binoculars to look ahead. “I really don’t know the way. I guess even that guy hasn’t been there before. The top of the Tower of Babel isn’t a place for small fry like us. I have to thank you for that.”

He never mentioned Christina or the others who died in City 023 again along the way. It was as if everything in the past was over for him. He seemed more normal than everyone else, which was what Lu Mingfei found most abnormal.

“But the map I received is correct. After crossing this U-shaped valley, we will follow the frozen river, and you will see a clear landmark where we can refuel.” Bunin finished speaking and returned to his seat.

A moment later, they indeed saw the “landmark,” and they could actually refuel there, because the landmark was actually a gas station. It was an empty gas station covered with thick snow, but the equipment was brand new, and diesel fuel could actually be sprayed out of the nozzle.

This was originally an ordinary building, but its appearance on the frozen Siberian plateau was the most bizarre thing. Some people seemed to no longer care about exposing themselves. They sent guides and built reception stations along the way to send Lu Mingfei off on his final journey, afraid that Lu Mingfei would turn around and run away.

Lu Mingfei parked hovercraft at the gas station entrance and filled up. He went inside to find something to eat, and as expected, the gas station thoughtfully stocked a wide variety of food, including the instant noodles he loved as a child—the same instant noodles the manufacturer had probably gone bankrupt ten years ago. It felt like a “good meal before he dies.” At this moment, he felt any request he made would be fulfilled; maybe if he shouted “Give me a girl!” a whole company of strippers in full costume would descend from the sky, dancing gracefully in front of him with their own poles.

While Lu Mingfei was boiling water to make instant noodles, Su Enxi had already found a gas stove and was preparing to grill meat. As expected of the former boss, she was directing Chu Zihang to run around aimlessly, with Zero helping out, but she clearly couldn’t do anything.

This girl may have grown up in a pampered environment, never having done any housework, yet she possesses the tenacity of a warrior, her fingers never get dirty, but she can get blood on them.

The polar night has begun, and it starts to get dark around three or four in the afternoon. The best option was to spend the night at this gas station specially prepared for Lu Mingfei. The convenience store has meat and fine liquor, and the wine list was as luxurious as any top restaurant in Paris.

Old Bunin was surprisingly skilled at grilling meat; every skewer he grilled was immediately snatched away, while he simply kept his head down, occasionally taking a sip of “Sturgeon” vodka from the bottle.

Snow began to fall outside the window, and the glow of the gas stove reflected on the glass, creating an inexplicable Christmas atmosphere.

“So none of us actually know where we’re going, right?” Lu Mingfei took a few sips of vodka, feeling happy, and looked around at everyone.

Zero lowered his head and ate a meat skewer, Su Enxi and Chu Zihang shrugged, and Bunin shook his head.

“Nobody wants to leave,” Lu Mingfei asked again. “Maybe it’s hell.”

“We come from hell,” Bunin whispered, “and we are going to heaven.”

“Cool, I’ll say it if you Russians are all poets,” Lu Mingfei said, giving a thumbs up. “Since we’re all here, let’s all be frank and have this as a snack with drinks.”

The people around the gas stove looked at each other, no one speaking. The previously harmonious atmosphere turned tense. Finally, Chu Zihang raised his hand, “How about I go first?”

“Tch,” Lu Mingfei and Su Enxi said at the same time, while Bunin shrugged and shook his head.

“Let me go first. I probably don’t know the most, but I have nothing left to hide,” Bunin said slowly.

“Won’t you get shot in the head if you tell us? I feel like there are still eyes watching us. Since your boss can open a gas station in this godforsaken place, it shouldn’t be difficult for him to monitor us along the way.” Lu Mingfei looked around. “This place should be full of listening devices and cameras. There should be some guy in a warm room watching us chat, like watching a ball game.”

“Since I know this, it’s an open secret. I’m not qualified to be trusted by the boss,” Bunin said. “As you know, the auction in City 023 started many years ago, but Auchinez guessed wrong. The serum was not processed in City 023. That guy doesn’t know the principle of the serum either. He was just a lackey like me.”

Lu Mingfei nodded. He had thought of that too. If the dark side of the world was truly a grand feast, then the real Alexander Bunin was just a servant at the table.

“So the serum wasn’t made from the blood of that big dragon?” Chu Zihang asked. Bunin shook his head. “That’s what he told me, but it’s probably a lie, although I don’t know where the serum came from.” He paused, then continued, “The value of our organization is nothing more than squeezing money out of its members, making them willingly serve the boss. He chooses people with original sin and greed, lays out a small lure, and remotely controls the Russian business world. There should be similar organizations in other parts of the world. I’ve privately calculated that the The boss has taken about $30 billion from Russia in the past twenty years, so in more economically developed regions, his profits would multiply.”

“Considering the total economic output of countries around the world over the past twenty years, conservatively speaking, that guy collects $24 billion a year in bribes to save his life.” Su Enxi quickly gave a precise answer: “Cash.”

“So many!” Chu Zihang exclaimed.

“Inaccurate. You’re much dumber than before.” Su Enxi shook her finger. “The world’s largest publicly traded company right now is Microsoft, with a market value of one trillion dollars and annual profits of over 20 billion dollars. In other words, this boss earns as much as Microsoft every year just from selling serums. No known billionaire has ever earned that much money, and that doesn’t even include his other income. So your boss is probably something like the king of the world, and he should be richer than my boss.”

“So you two haven’t the same boss,” Lu Mingfei said, pointing at Bunin and then at Su Enxi. He glanced at Zero, but couldn’t bring himself to point at her. Zero silently looked out the window, seemingly uninterested in their conversation.

“If we had the same boss, you would have been smoothly delivered to your destination long ago, without all these twists and turns,” Su Enxi snorted.

“No wonder that guy want to attend that banquet so much,” Chu Zihang said, “the banquet of the King of the World.”

“Then who were the guests at that banquet?” Bunin said slowly. “Or was it just an empty table with only one person sitting at the end, eating the flesh and blood of the whole world?”

Lu Mingfei shuddered slightly; the thought of such a scene was truly terrifying.
