Dragon Raja 5

Su Enxi suddenly realized. The auctioneer was forbidden from handling the serum, which was why he had to entrust Lu Mingfei with the task.

An even more terrifying thought flashed through his mind: that substitute for Alexander Bunin—he wanted that serum not for Christina, but for himself.

He knew all too well that once his service ended, a comfortable retirement wouldn’t await him, but rather a bullet fired from who-knows-where. He was old and weary; he needed a serum to face the challenges ahead.

But right now she can’t control Lu Mingfei. If this negotiation falls apart, she’ll die. As a civilian cadre, she’s no match for this real Bunin. Even a fool could tell that he’s using the Soviet Captain’s technology on himself.

She had to concentrate. She took a deep breath, trying to bring her chaotic thoughts back to her old days in the casino, where all she faced were cards and chips.

She still has leverage; if she didn’t, Bunin wouldn’t have kept her around until now.

“Aren’t you afraid of arousing suspicion by replacing the clone with a new one?” Su Enxi asked. She was simply stalling for time because she really couldn’t think of a way to deal with this Bunin.

“No, no, why should I step forward myself? The heir I chose is you, my dear Auchinez.” Bunin chuckled and patted Auchinez’s head before turning to stroke the child who had just tormented Auchinez.

The clone looked up at Bunin with the same expression one would give a father, his little face showing a sweet and adorable look.

“You want to replace me with this guy?” Auchinez roared. “Who would believe that Valodya would believe that Sonia would believe?”

“Sonia is dead. You were the one who did it. Have you forgotten?” Bunin sighed.

Auchinez’s expression changed drastically. Su Enxi suddenly remembered that he had told her that killing Sonia was not his intention. At the time, Su Enxi did not believe him at all. Clearly, he had prepared to lure Sonia to assassinate him and then successfully kill her instead.

But now, looking back, it’s clear that the intense will to survive can distort the mind, even surpassing the madness instilled by dragon blood. In the darkness, they think only of survival, sometimes even forgetting the sins they’ve committed.

“You’ve received the serum and just returned to being a child, so you’re still going through a period of psychological adjustment and your memories are a bit muddled,” Bunin continued. “But you’ll soon grow into a qualified host. You’re so young; you can serve for a long time. You’re someone I personally trained; you’re more obedient and well-behaved, unlike my other self who always disappointed me. I have very high expectations for you.”

“So, your own clone isn’t so obedient, huh?” Su Enxi said.

“This is truly an embarrassing family matter,” Bunin said with a wry smile. “When I was developing my clone, I tried my best to give him the exact same life experiences as me. I told him about City 023, about the vast Siberia, hoping he would understand the era I grew up in. Of course, I also told him about my beloved Bella Lipnitskaya. I even sent him to Bella’s side to test whether Bella could detect that the person beside him had been changed. If Bella couldn’t tell, then no one else could either. That would only come at a price: I would have to agree to let him appear by Bella’s side as her husband. What I didn’t expect was that he fell in love with Bella, a puppet falling in love with his mistress.”

Su Enxi was so shocked she couldn’t speak, while Auchinez burst into laughter, slapping the ground as if she were watching the most hilarious scene in a comedy. “The girl you dreamed of as a child didn’t end up loving you; she fell in love with your puppet,” Auchinez spat out a mouthful of blood. “Did you know she secretly went to see a psychiatrist? She had severe depression because she felt you weren’t the person she was looking for. But later, her depression cleared up on its own. The person who cured her was the puppet you created yourself.”

Bunin’s expression shifted, then he smiled again. “So what? He just lived a part of my life. I never allowed him to truly possess Bella. Christina is still the child Bella and I had.”

Auchinez continued to laugh wildly, laughing so hard he couldn’t speak, but Su Enxi spoke up, “You’ve never thought about why she had that child, knowing it would kill her.”

“Why?” Bunin asked instinctively.

“Because she felt that if she were to leave this world, someone would have to be with Alexander Bunin. She felt that her husband lacked love, neither loving nor being loved by others, except for her. If there was someone he could love by his side, he wouldn’t fall into hell.”

“The child she risked her life to give birth to was for that puppet, not for you!” Auchinez finally roared. “That puppet has taken your entire life away. You are the puppet who impersonated you and possessed Bella. That child is your puppet’s daughter, regardless of whose blood flows in her veins.”

Bunin was stunned. The young and handsome Tatar face, which had been tense at first, suddenly twisted, and then his eyes and eyebrows twitched violently. He suddenly pushed aside the children beside him and rushed forward to stomp on Auchinez’s head.

Auchinez seemed to have anticipated his reaction and grabbed his leg. Bunin, exasperated, could only furiously strike the back of Auchinez’s neck with his fists and elbows, producing a deafening metallic clang, as if Auchinez’s neck might snap at any moment.

Auchinez didn’t fight back at all; he just clung tightly to Bunin’s leg, letting him beat him until he bled profusely. The children, who regarded Bunin as their god and father, rushed up and ganged up on Auchinez.

In an instant, Su Enxi could no longer see Auchinez; all she saw was blood gushing from the children’s feet, so much that it made one wonder if a person could possibly have that much blood in their body.

“I’m going to die if you don’t seize this opportunity, you stupid woman!” Auchinez roared.

“I’m so sorry, my dear friend. I’m very grateful for your help, but I have to make a choice for Christina.” Bunin looked into Lu Mingfei’s eyes, his gaze unexpectedly sincere and sorrowful.

Lu Mingfei glanced at Chu Zihang, who sheathed his long sword and took out a glass bottle from his backpack.

“You just took the box, but you didn’t check the contents of the box,” Lu Mingfei said.

Bunin wasn’t particularly agitated; instead, he gave a wry smile. “So there’s no trust between us, is there?”

“Originally, there was, but I suddenly realized there’s a huge loophole in your story.” Lu Mingfei sighed. “You couldn’t buy the serum yourself for some reason, so you asked me to buy it for you, right?”

“Yes, as the facilitator of the transaction, I cannot touch any of the serums.”

“ALS usually starts to appear in youth, and patients typically live into middle age, just like your wife.”

Yes.
