Dragon Raja 5

Auchinez sneered. “I bet the GRU troops are here for the serum factory too. The treasure trove of immortality is hidden behind some door in the air-raid shelter.”

“Looks like whether it’s for survival or for making money, we should all go check out the air-raid shelter.” Su Enxi kicked Auchinez in the butt. “Come on, get up and get to work.”

GRU soldiers patrolled the area with guns along the way, and every dead body in the hall was shot again. It was clearly a purge with no intention of leaving any survivors.

Despite losing an arm, Auchinez used the same trick again, stealthily moving behind two GRU soldiers and slashing their throats with a chop, instantly suffocating them. But just as he reached for his gun, Su Enxi pounced on him, grabbing one and kicking the other far away, its muzzle pointed at Auchinez. Auchinez bared his teeth in anger, but was helpless. Su Enxi, of course, couldn’t trust this old thief who looked like a child, especially since his bloodthirsty genes after rebirth hadn’t stabilized yet. To vent his anger, after stripping the GRU soldiers of their protective clothing, Auchinez still plunged his claws into their throats, coldly licking the blood that stained them.

Su Enxi wasn’t sure whether this temporary ally was more dangerous or the hellhounds; she couldn’t let the weapons fall into Auchinez’s hands.

Disguised as GRU warriors, they successfully navigated several key intersections. Zero had recounted that experience to Su Enxi in its entirety, and they found the office without much trouble.

“Alexander Bunin’s forbidden zone… none of us have ever been to this mysterious office. So who does he meet in this office?” Auchinez clicked his tongue as he flipped through the various documents on the table.

Su Enxi studied the old-fashioned control panel on the side of the desk. It had so many buttons that most of the building’s facilities could be operated in this office, but not the powerful fusion reactor, which should have its own control room.

Bunin left Auchinez with no clues, and some of the documents he left behind date back to the 1960s. The office desk seemed to have been unused for a long time.

But Auchinez smiled mysteriously, picked up the pen on the table, signed his name on the edge of a piece of paper, and showed it to Su Enxi. His guess was correct.

The ink in the fountain pen hadn’t dried, and the red and blue pencils beside it were freshly sharpened. This well-preserved office was still in use; Bunin had to sign off on all sorts of things, but the documents were all moved away afterward. City 023 wasn’t truly abandoned; it had been functioning, which was why it needed management. However, whether the serum factory Auchinez mentioned actually existed was still unknown; perhaps it was just a team responsible for guarding the black dragon.

“We need password to open the air-raid shelter.” Su Enxi looked up.

Auchinez hesitated for a moment, then gave a birthday, “Try different combinations of it.” As soon as Su Enxi tried the second combination, the sound of gears turning came from the entrance of the passage.

“Your understanding of Alexander Bunin exceeds my expectations. Whose birthday is this? Her daughter’s?” Su Enxi glanced at Auchinez.

“Bella lipnitskaya, a once very popular film actress in Moscow, her birthday is not hard to find.”

“Bunin’s wife” Su Enxi immediately understood.

“Actually, we always thought that the story about that woman was made up by him.” Auchinez pulled a flashlight out of office drawer.

The structure of the air-raid shelter was far more complex than Su Enxi had imagined. They descended layer by layer, encountering many forks in the road along the way.

They could faintly hear the howling of hellhounds, but they didn’t encounter them. Perhaps the hellhounds were far away, and they could only hear them because of the repeated refraction of the passage, or it could simply be an illusion.

Auchinez walked in front, with Su Enxi following behind, gun in hand. They followed the signs on the concrete wall, but the signs were all vague. Su Enxi thought they were clearly lost; they couldn’t even hear the barking of dogs anymore. But Auchinez was still diligently searching for the way.

“Life is truly a miracle,” Auchinez murmured, scraping his claws against the wall.

I originally thought that concrete buildings were lifeless, but deep inside the air-raid shelter, there was moss and lichen growing, and the deeper you went, the better they grew. When you shone a flashlight on them, they looked like a thick layer of velvet.

“We don’t have time to waste,” Su Enxi said coldly. “Once the magnetic field drops below the critical point, neutron radiation will wipe us out in minutes, won’t it?”

“A waste of time,” Auchinez sneered. “Lichens and mosses are life too. You won’t get lost if you follow the signs of life. It’s Bunin’s signs that will lead you to your death.”

“Such a huge space requires an enormous amount of engineering work. City 023 was built with the full support of the nation. Can Bunin mobilize such vast resources?”

“It wasn’t entirely dug out. Most people think the permafrost is a solid block of rock, but that’s wrong. Due to an effect called glacial erosion, numerous cavities appear in the permafrost. It’s ice that created these cavities, and Bunin only needed to reinforce and support them with cement. In 1918, Red Army partisans entered Siberia and fought against the White Army, accidentally entering such cavities. When they crawled out, they found they had found another exit 120 kilometers away.” Auchinez paused. “Lichens and mosses don’t grow just anywhere; they prefer areas with high water content and require a small amount of sunlight. Guess where the sunlight comes from?”

Su Enxi looked up and saw that there were no lights installed at the top of the passage. There was only a faint indicator light at a far corner, and it was still off at the moment.

Auchinez shook the flashlight in his hand. “This is enough. People carrying lanterns pass through this passage repeatedly, and the light illuminates the walls. This little bit of light is enough to sustain the lichen and moss. The air moisture content is also higher in places where people walk frequently. You won’t regret following me. Bunin is indeed a cunning fellow, but he’s still a cutie compared to me.”

Su Enxi had to admire this guy’s knowledge and experience. It was a cunning and bloodthirsty encyclopedia, recording all sorts of anecdotes from the Soviet Patriotic War to the present day.

“Having lived for so many years, aren’t you tired of living yet?” Su Enxi said casually. “Do you want to be the last one standing, even if you have no friends left?”
