The little BMW merged into the rolling traffic. The woman waved goodbye from behind the car, holding an umbrella in one hand and a tea egg in the other.

In the white RV, Nuonuo leaned over the huge steering wheel and glanced at Lu Mingfei, “Have you seen enough?”

Lu Mingfei was silent for a long time, then smiled and said, “It’s not about whether it’s enough or not, I just want to say goodbye to them.”

“Shouldn’t you get out of the car and tell them in person? You could even make up some excuse, saying the college urgently called you back to work on your thesis or something, and that you’d come back to see them during the Spring Festival.”

“I’ve told so many lies, so many that I don’t want to say them anymore.”

Nuonuo nodded, started the engine, and the RV started slowly, accelerated, and drove into the wind and rain.

“Don’t you have anything to ask me?” Ten hours later, Lu Mingfei finally broke the silence.

The RV had been running continuously on the highway for almost ten hours, and Nono hadn’t said a word the whole time.

It was raining heavily all the way. There were not many cars on the highway and they were driving very cautiously. Only their large RV was driving at high speed the whole way, overtaking and turning corners, splashing up a wall of water more than one person high.

It was obvious that Nuonuo was very anxious, but her emotions did not show on her face. She firmly controlled this powerful machine and did not ask to change shifts with Lu Mingfei, as if she would never get tired.

 When she was hungry, she would continue driving with a chocolate-filled croissant in her mouth. Lu Mingfei stole a glance at her profile. She became so majestic again, like a Valkyrie carved from the hardest white marble, except that the croissant was a little cute.

“What’s the problem?” Nuonuo glanced at Lu Mingfei. “If it’s an irrelevant question, don’t ask. Save your energy, there will be a time when I need you to drive.”

“For example, who am I?” Lu Mingfei paused, “or what am I?”

From the moment he woke up until now, the only time Nuonuo and him had spoken was when they watched his uncle and aunt leave. All other conversations were in a commanding tone, such as “Follow me” or “Leave here, now.”

She didn’t ask a single question about what happened in the hospital, as if that horrific night had never existed. After she saw Lu Mingfei’s deepest hidden secret, she forgot everything.

“I guess you don’t know either, so don’t waste time asking.” Nono said calmly, “But there’s always someone in this world who knows more than you and me. Once we find that person, everything will be clear. There’s no need to discuss it now.”

“Someone knows more than us?”

“In the EVA’s underlying command library, there are several commands specifically designed to protect you. If your life is threatened, it can even automatically obtain authorization to destroy those who threaten you.” Nuonuo turned her head and glanced at Lu Mingfei. “You are not an insignificant person. You are a valuable asset of the academy. The academy has poured a lot of resources into training you and making you their weapon. It’s just that the weapon itself knows nothing about this.”

“Important assets?” Lu Mingfei pondered the word and smiled silently.

For such a long time I felt like a waste, that no one cared or even knew whether I was dead or alive, but it turned out that I was an important asset in the eyes of some people.

Everything suddenly made sense. Why had he, a rookie, been sent to the front lines of dragon slaying since freshman year? Why had he survived in that elite academy, even rising to the position of student union president? This was essentially a monster-raising program, raising a giant monster to devour the smaller ones.

What happens in the end? The final outcome should be to poison the monster before it realizes what’s happening. From then on, all threats are eliminated, humans live together in close friendship, and the monsters’ corpses are buried deep in the earth.

“But those orders have been revoked now, so EVA can’t protect you anymore.” Nono added, “A global arrest warrant for us could be issued at any moment. They won’t let a humanoid dragon-slaying machine run around freely.”

Lu Mingfei was silent for a long time, “Sister, aren’t you afraid of me?”

“Afraid of you?” Nuonuo glanced at him.

“A monster that can fight against Odin is probably a dragon king or something like that, right?”

“Do you think you are?”
