“When you were unconscious, I talked a lot to Susie.” Nono broke the silence.

“Huh?” Lu Mingfei was stunned.

“One of the passages goes like this,” Nuonuo continued, still looking out the window. “I said, when I was most sad, I always wanted someone, no matter if he was riding a white horse or a black donkey, to suddenly come and help me. He would help me beat up anyone I hated, and he would comfort me when I cried. But no one came.”

Lu Mingfei nodded blankly, not understanding why Nuonuo suddenly told him this.

“I’ve been helping you all this time. It’s actually such a simple thing. Helping you is like helping my past self.” Nuonuo said softly, “I’m sorry if I made you misunderstand anything.”

Lu Mingfei stared at Nuonuo blankly, then suddenly lowered his head in embarrassment and grabbed the part of his head that Nuonuo had shaved bald.

Ever since they fled China, they hadn’t spoken once about their relationship. They spoke much less to each other, even less if Chu Zihang hadn’t been there. They seemed close once, but then drifted apart again, even further than when they first met.

But tonight, Nuonuo brought up the matter unexpectedly, leaving Lu Mingfei no way out. In this small glass attic, he had nowhere to escape, and he had to listen whether he wanted to or not.

“I know what kind of person I am in your heart, but I’m probably not as good as you think.” Nuonuo continued, “You’ve also met Shao Yifeng. Do you think I wouldn’t know that Shao Yifeng likes me?”

Lu Mingfei shook his head.

“If I were a good girl, I should have deleted his contact from my phone. This way, I would have saved myself a lot of trouble. He might have been sad for a while, but no one can be sad forever. After the sadness is over, he can be a good man again. It’s good for both him and me, but why haven’t I cut off contact with him yet?”

Lu Mingfei could only shake his head.

“Because I’m very afraid of being alone. The more people like me, the more secure I’ll feel. To put it bluntly, I’m just like those vain girls. I need a lot of backups. I don’t need these backups to do anything for me, but I don’t want to be alone.” Nono sipped his beer. “Isn’t that bad?”

“It’s…it’s okay.” Lu Mingfei said hesitantly.

Nuonuo smiled coldly, “My heartlessness is all fake. I have a lot of little thoughts, some of which even Susie doesn’t know about. I’m also very good at finding all kinds of reasons to forgive myself. I keep telling myself that it’s okay if those backups like me. After all, boys will inexplicably like a girl when they are young. I’m such a bad person, I will definitely be left alone in the end.”

“No… you’re overthinking it… it has nothing to do with you.” The more Lu Mingfei spoke, the more he felt he was tongue-tied.

“I’m done. This is the first time I’ve said this to someone, so my words might not be very clear. The road ahead will be difficult, so it’s best to speak your mind in advance. You saved me, and I’m very grateful. Now it’s my turn to repay you, and it’s also because I don’t believe you are the Dragon King. We are partners, and only partners.” Nuonuo stood up and threw the blanket on Lu Mingfei. “I’m going to sleep. If you want to continue watching, put on the blanket. There seems to be something wrong with the heating, and the room is a bit cold.”

She walked a few steps and turned back. “I don’t think you went to the movies. I said I wanted to go, but I was just teasing you. You don’t have to make up excuses. You know this place better than I do. You have friends here. You could be visiting a friend, or you could be alone for a while and reminisce about an old friend. It’s all fine. It has nothing to do with me. You don’t have to explain to me.”

She lay on the enchanting velvet bed, without taking off her clothes, and pulled the quilt over herself. Soon, the only sound in the room was her regular breathing.

Chu Zihang poked his head out from behind the sofa and looked at Lu Mingfei with a look of concern. The bed belonged to Nuonuo, the bathtub belonged to Lu Mingfei, and the sofa belonged to Chu Zihang. It turned out that he had been awake the whole time that Nuonuo and Lu Mingfei were talking, with a messy head of hair.

Lu Mingfei waved his hand at him, implying that he should stop meddling in adult matters. Chu Zihang’s head sank from the back of the sofa, and a moment later, the sound of a calm breathing filled the room.

Lu Mingfei drank can after can of Nuonuo’s remaining beer, observing her sleeping profile. Her jaw was small and pointed, her face pale, and there were a few tiny freckles on the tip of her nose. Lu Mingfei suddenly realized the answer: Nuonuo looked like a little fox! Not a raccoon or a red panda, but a skinny, alert little fox.

He laughed silently and spoke to Nuonuo silently, “Senior Sister, you don’t need to tell me so much. I already know what kind of person you are.”

Late at night, Tokyo Port, Pier 96.

This place was far from the familiar harbor area, with virtually no commercial buildings around. Just an endless expanse of rocky beaches and the dark, undulating sea. Grayish-white concrete pillars stretched out into the depths of the sea, marking an unfinished pier used for unloading cargo.     

The only cargo ships loading and unloading here were cargo ships, and the goods they carried were usually not high-value goods. Looking out, the docks were piled high with rusty containers, and the air was filled with a slight stench. Several large red cranes stood silently in the night, like the skeletons of dead giants, creating a rather majestic and beautiful atmosphere.
