Dragon Raja 5; Chapter 183: Leviathan’s Song (20)

Dragon Raja 5

“The night we arrived in Moscow, I asked someone to look up the coordinates you gave me. It was supposed to be an uninhabited area in northern Siberia, but it’s marked as a military restricted area. Access requires a very high-level pass. Further research revealed that restricted area was once used for a military project called Project Delta, but that program ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. Vatutin was in charge of high-tech projects at the Ministry of Defense, but his knowledge of them was limited. Therefore, the people behind that project must be higher-ranking than he is.”

“So that’s how it is.”

The two continued strolling, Zero’s high-heeled boots making a clattering sound on the pavement. Far away at the end of the street stood a golden-domed, onion-shaped church, brightly lit, making one feel as if they were strolling through a midnight amusement park.

“Regarding my family,” Zero suddenly asked, “Are there any other questions?”

“No.” Lu Mingfei was stunned. “Aren’t you from the Romanov family?”

“You and I are just ordinary classmates. You are now wanted by the secret party. I have no reason to help you, but I am here. You now know that I have a family and belong to a certain force. Don’t you want to know why I am helping you?”

“If it were in the past, I would ask.” Lu Mingfei scratched his head, “but I don’t want to ask now.”

“Why?” Ling showed curiosity, which was rare for him, and tilted his head to look at Lu Mingfei.

“I used to think everything was simple, but now I don’t even understand myself, so I don’t want to ask any more questions. It doesn’t matter if you have your own reasons. Anyway, you came to help me when I was at my worst.”

“What else do you know about that coordinate?”

“I don’t know.” Lu Mingfei raised his head and took a deep breath of the cold air. “Someone called me and told me these coordinates. He said he was my father.”

“I heard you haven’t seen each other for many years, and you only talked on the phone. Didn’t you suspect anything?”

“I had a father,” Lu Mingfei smiled, “and he knows everything about my childhood, some very private things that I have never told anyone.”

He didn’t even tell Nunuo these things, but when Ling asked, he told them casually, feeling that it was not a big deal.

“Do you think they’ll be waiting for you there?”

“I don’t know,” Lu Mingfei wrinkled his nose and said seriously, “but I think I can find some answers there, such as who I am.”

“Maybe there’s a trap.”

“It’s possible, but I just have a feeling that I should go. I can’t really explain the feeling, it’s like some sort of ‘end’ where good or bad things might happen, but you feel you should go.”

“If you get there and discover you’re truly the Dragon King, what will you do? Grow horns and scales and become an enemy of humans?”

“I don’t know,” Lu Mingfei said. He had said “I don’t know” too many times tonight. “If we can really get there, let me walk the last part of the way by myself. That way, the Lu Mingfei you know will always be me. As for the monster that reaches the end, just kill it. Don’t hesitate. It’s not me.”

“If the person standing here was Chen Motong, would you say the same thing to her?” Zero suddenly stopped and turned to look at Lu Mingfei, her eyes bright and sharp.

“No, she won’t stand here.” Lu Mingfei looked at his toes in silence for a moment, raised his head and answered with a smile.

“Because she certainly can’t execute you, right? She’s actually a very soft-hearted person. All her hesitations are due to her soft heart.”

Lu Mingfei nodded. “If I really deserve to die, I hope I die where she can’t see me.”

“What about me? You know I have my own reasons for coming here with you, but you still let me accompany you to your final destination?”

Lu Mingfei nodded. “Don’t worry. Although I don’t quite understand the reason, I believe you.”

Zero also nodded, “You can trust me and consider me as a partner.”

“Partner?” Lu Mingfei asked, because Zero emphasized the word.

“It’s the kind of person you can trust with your back, someone who won’t give up on you or betray you.” Zero suddenly stopped and looked across the long, leaf-covered street at a vacant lot. “For the common good, they’re the kind of people who can walk together to the end.”

“For the common good,” Lu Mingfei whispered, “if our interests diverge, won’t we go our separate ways?”

He didn’t know why Zero emphasized this word. It didn’t sound very powerful, far inferior to “friend” and “brother”.

“It doesn’t matter,” Zero said calmly, “Just work hard and become useful to your friends, and you won’t be left behind.”

When she said this, her expression was calm, yet full of vigor, with a gleam in her eyes as she looked into the distance. She felt like the heroine in a youth film gazing at the rising sun, firmly saying the inexplicably passionate yet bragging line, “It’s never wrong to run towards the rising sun when you’re young.”

Lu Mingfei was really curious about who taught Zero her world view and outlook on life. Her style of doing things was so sharp, and she had a maturity that was completely disproportionate to her appearance, but she suddenly said such childish words. It was just like Lu Mingfei many years ago, who felt that he was living in a comic book and was full of “ambitions” and “sad wishes” for the world.

Now that he has grown up, he no longer believes in this, but when someone suddenly says what he would say when he was fourteen, he inexplicably feels a little nostalgic.

Lu Mingfei suddenly grabbed the mink hat and rubbed Zero’s head vigorously. He was being a bit mischievous, meaning, “How can you boast when you look so young?”

But to his surprise, Her Majesty the Queen didn’t react at all to this “overstepping” action. She just stared across the street quietly, letting Lu Mingfei touch her head. It was as if this was normal. She was your cat, you had raised her for many years.

The platinum-blonde hair felt surprisingly good to the touch, like washed silk, with a slight warmth, just like that “you can’t stop petting a cat” feeling. But Lu Mingfei felt really awkward after petting her twice, so he had to put the hat back on her.

“Across the street was the Academy of Sciences library. I used to live there.” Zero nodded at the open space across the street.

It seems that the head-patting action did not bother her at all. There was no “slight ripple in her heart”. She was just talking about what she cared about.

Lu Mingfei looked across the street in confusion. There was a vacant lot covered in fallen leaves, surrounded by a wire fence with a sign in Russian. He couldn’t tell if it said “For Sale” or “Private Land, Keep Out.” The sign was old, too, suggesting no one had cared for the land in a long time.

There were a few old buildings from the Soviet era further away, but they were all dark and not very clear.

“Shall we go over and take a look?” Lu Mingfei said.

“No, it was burned many years ago.” Zero said softly.
