Dragon Raja 5; Chapter 368: For Your Majesty (183)

Dragon Raja 5

They were prepared for the night; their sleds were equipped with camping gear and a fuel stove, enough to keep them warm through the night. It was colder here than the Arctic, and even the most dangerous predators—mainly bears—should have found somewhere to hibernate.

Chu Zihang and Su Enxi could last for several days without any problem. Even if the fuel tank ran out, they could still keep warm by drinking vodka while wrapped in their military overcoats.

They quickened their pace, wanting to cover as much distance as possible before dark. Not long after, Lu Mingfei, who was at the front, suddenly stopped, looked at his feet, and shivered violently.

There were faint sled tracks on the snow, indicating that the sled had just passed by in such a violent blizzard.

Bunin was also taken aback. Zero realized something was wrong ahead and hurriedly followed. The three of them looked at each other through their goggles.

“Are we going in circles?” Zero asked.

“Impossible. We’ve been following the crevasse the whole time, and,” Bunin paused, “this sled is wider than ours.”

The crisis came suddenly. Someone had arrived in the no-man’s-land before them. It wasn’t enough for them to blow up the gas station; they should also destroy the bunkers.

What remains unclear is who they are trekking with in the snowstorm: pursuers from Cassel College? A team sent by a boss to monitor them? Another possibility is that they are competitors, someone who wants to reach that coordinate before them.

“None of us know who that person is, right?” Lu Mingfei looked at Zero, then at Bunin.

Both of them shook their heads in denial, but Lu Mingfei believed them. So, the suddenly appearing unfamiliar team was a threat to all three of them.

“Let’s keep going. They’ll set up camp when it gets dark, and we should see the campfires,” Lu Mingfei said. “We thought it was some kind of cemetery, but it turns out some people are rushing to bury their dead before us.”

He scooped Zero up and placed her on the sled, exchanged a glance with Bunin, and the two of them pulled the sled forward with all their might. Although this would wear them down faster, it would prevent them from being slowed down by Zero’s short legs… Although for her height, those were already perfect long legs, trekking in the snow is all about absolute length.

The further they went, the clearer the sled tracks became, which seemed like a good sign, indicating that the group was also pulling their sleds by hand and were not moving very fast.

Bunin continued to pull the sled forward, while Lu Mingfei took the PPSh submachine gun off his shoulder—this old-fashioned weapon from World War II performed extremely well in the frigid weather and was found in the weapons cabinet on the hovercraft—and scouted ahead for more than ten meters.

Now that we could encounter the enemy at any moment, with such dense snow, we might bump into each other before even noticing each other. Regardless of whether it would work or not, Lu Mingfei was prepared to throw a burst of bullets at them first.

But the expected enemy never appeared. The sled tracks became clearer and clearer, but the sled itself was nowhere to be seen. It was as if the sled in front knew their speed very well. When they were fast, the sled was fast; when they were slow, the sled was slow. It was steadily leading them by several hundred meters.

Night finally fell, and it was clear that they wouldn’t be able to catch up if they continued chasing like this. Lu Mingfei had no choice but to turn back to his sled, but as he walked, he stopped…

There was no sled behind him, nor were Bunin and Zero. He didn’t know when the rope around his waist had broken, and he dragged a broken rope across the snowfield for who knows how far! In an instant, fear surged into his heart, and he felt his blood freezing.

“Hey! Hey!” he shouted, but his voice was swallowed up by the wind before it could travel far.

He was lost in this no-man’s-land. It seemed that Bunin and Zero had both abandoned him. It was a one-way road that belonged only to him, and in the end, he could only walk it alone.

He couldn’t believe it. He trusted Bunin, and even more so Zero. Even if they were both hiding something from him, they shouldn’t be birds of a feather… But reality seemed cruel. They cut the rope and left, leaving him alone to wait for death in the wind and snow.

He had no supplies, no tent, and no heating equipment. Even with his hybrid physique, he couldn’t survive a single night in the blizzard of the polar night unless he summoned the little devil. His last wish in life was to give me a heater.

He suddenly panicked. The peace he had maintained along the way was shattered. He ran wildly through the snow, shouting as he ran. He thought that someone must have attacked Zero and Bunin from behind. Those people had silently kidnapped their companions and cut the ropes.

He quickly ran out of energy and realized how foolish he had been. He wandered aimlessly through the snow for a long time, losing all sense of direction, until he could no longer see the crevasses. He hadn’t brought a compass or Finger, because the Finger’s battery wasn’t suitable for working in such cold weather.

The only trace left was that mysterious sled; it hadn’t been lost, and it was right under his feet, so clearly visible.

The polar night descended, and darkness enveloped everything. He trudged through the snow, clutching his PPSh submachine gun. He grew colder and more exhausted. His vision began to blur as his body temperature dropped, and his brain seemed frozen, unable to think.

The sled tracks disappeared, and he stopped, smiled sadly, and knelt down in the knee-deep snow.

This life is truly a fucking joke. Shouldn’t it have been a spectacular ending? A tragic yet triumphant one, a magnificent one, with girls wailing for you? Instead, you froze to death in the snow.

It’s not beautiful at all, not flashy at all, and… so lonely…

He could no longer feel the cold, and his consciousness gradually faded, as if the last embers deep in his brain were about to go out. Just then, he heard the sound of bells in the wind and snow.

The flickering light at the edge of the world was like someone striking a match. In the light came a sled pulled by four reindeer, each over two meters tall, with red ribbons tied to their bodies, as if they were going to take him to a grand celebration. It was a cloudy day with warm but not glaring sunlight. The terracotta pot in front of the window was full of purple wildflowers, the flowers shaped like small bells.

A gentle breeze blew, and Lu Mingfei’s gaze followed the rise and fall of the curtains, which featured a bear holding a strawberry.
