“So, we are giant whales.” Caesar had to change to a relaxed tone.

“Of course, it’s not completely without impact. Some facilities on the ship had to be temporarily shut down while we were crossing the ice storm,” said the first mate.

“For example?” Caesar asked.

“The radio communication system and satellite navigation system are likely to fail, and we’ll have to rely entirely on the compass at some point. But we’re so close to the North Pole now, a compass is useless.” The first mate counted on his fingers. “The air conditioning and hot water systems will definitely have problems. There will be a temporary power outage. All equipment on deck will have to be disabled. The heated swimming pool will also be out of service, and water will splash out. The restaurant will have to be temporarily closed. We can’t use open flames right now…”

“Then what other equipment can be used on your broken ship?” Finger was stunned.

“There will be no problem with the heating system. We use mechanical heating. Hot water is drawn from the cooling water of the reactor and transported to each cabin.” The first mate showed a proud smile unique to the fighting nation.

“The only thing left is the hot water from the nuclear reactor?” Finger said with a sad face, “Can we take a bath with that water?”

“There might be trace amounts of radiation. If you don’t mind, it’s okay to take a shower.” The first mate patted Finger’s shoulder. “Trust me, brother. To sail in the Arctic, all you need is a warm nuclear reactor and a propeller that spins forever!”

“I think you Russians have nuclear-powered brains too!”

“There’s another system that has to be temporarily deactivated.” EVA interrupted the conversation between the two. “While you’re sailing in the storm, the satellite signal will be very weak. I won’t be able to provide you with any service…”

Before she could finish her words, the entire ship suddenly shook violently. The library was pitch dark. A few seconds later, the emergency lights came on, but the projected map did not recover, and the sound of EVA disappeared.

The first mate cursed something in Russian in a heroic tone, grabbed a bottle of wine and went out. I think he was cursing the damn power supply system. He said it was a fault and it broke down, and he was about to rush to the front line to repair it.

“You have a smart crew,” Schneider said, looking at Rebalco.

“The power supply system will be restored within an hour. It is our responsibility to protect our customers!” Rebalco said politely.

“No,” Schneider pointed to his desk. “I mean, even in such dim light, he still picked out my most expensive bottle of vodka.”

The library was silent for a few seconds, and everyone laughed at the same time. No matter how bad the situation was, it was always reassuring to sail with a group of guys who were still interested in drinking.

“I’ll go take a look outside.” Abbas bowed slightly and left the library.

Caesar hesitated for a few seconds, then followed silently. Schneider, who was opening another bottle of wine to share with Rebalco, saw Caesar leave but only nodded slightly.

In the cigar room of the YAMAL, Caesar sat, gazing at a movie poster on the wall. It was the original 1942 poster for Casablanca, now yellowed and aged, a collectible today, yet it lay forgotten, untouched.

When this ship was the largest casino ship in the Arctic Ocean, cigar-loving gamblers liked to gather here to smoke cigars and watch old movies. Today, the layout remains the same, but it is covered with dust.

Caesar did not come here to smoke a cigar and enjoy solitude. He released the “Sickle-weasel” and listened to the movements coming from the upper cabin.

This word spirit was very suitable for eavesdropping. Even someone as perceptive as Abbas would find it difficult to notice that the wall has ears.

Caesar shouldn’t have doubted Abbas. He and the man were friends, though they had their moments of rivalry. They shared many memories, and if it turned out that Abbas didn’t exist, even Caesar would have felt that life was a bit unreal.

He recalled that rainy night in Istanbul, where he sat relaxed, repeatedly raising his glass of ouzo, while the man across from him smiled and drank it all in one gulp. Every smile was still vivid in his mind. Was that warm, rainy night never really there? Or was it that he had simply raised his glass to the air that night, and the seat across from him was just as empty as it is now?

But Caesar had to admit that there were doubts about Abbas. He had no family and few friends, and his past could not be verified. However, he was so brave, determined and self-disciplined that even the male protagonists in medieval knights were not as perfect as him.

Is it really possible for humans to be so perfect? Even Caesar couldn’t claim to be perfect; he had his pride, his willfulness, his vanity… But Abbas was impeccable. In his quiet moments, he resembled a monk at peace with the world, but in action, he was a sharp sword, unyielding to any evil. He also had no desires, never showing any interest in beautiful women.

Caesar even thought that if he were to stay in the Vatican for a few years, he would surely be elected Pope and carry out God’s will. Perhaps even God would have to say, “I trust you to do the job.”

To Caesar’s surprise, Schneider also had the same suspicion. The two had a brief conversation in Aberdeen. Schneider hoped that Caesar could keep an eye on Abbas at all times and not let Abbas notice.

“Maybe sometimes the whole world is wrong and the one who is right is a madman,” said Schneider.

That’s why Caesar followed Abbas out of the library. He was always in the cabin below Abbas, following Abbas’s footsteps.

The ice storm hit suddenly. Although EVA also said that this kind of atmospheric phenomenon is not uncommon in the Arctic easterly wind belt, it always gave people a sense of foreboding. Looking out from the window of the smoking room at this moment, the outside was simply a hell made of ice and snow. The ship’s power supply system might be a bit outdated. Even after taking away the bottle of the most expensive vodka, the first mate still couldn’t fix it. At this time, except for the sailors who were on duty, most people gathered in the library. People feel safe in places with a lot of people. This is human nature. But Abbas left the library and wandered alone on the YAMAL. He strolled through the casino hall, stopped briefly in the kitchen, passed through the gym, and then went to the luxurious circular ballroom. There was nothing there except a light dust on the floor, just like the cigar room where Caesar was.
