Dragon Raja 3; Chapter 342: Family Dinner (3)

Dragon Raja 3

“I don’t change my scripts. In my script, they will have their wedding on the seventh day, and it will happen as planned,” the boss said casually. “Have you prepared what I asked you to?”

Mai opened the long box in front of her. The menacing iron gleam of the sniper rifle reflected in her eyes. It was an AS50 heavy sniper rifle, used by U.S. Navy SEALs, with a range of over two kilometers. Its five bullets could be fired in under two seconds, creating a deadly barrage, leaving no room for the target to escape.

This was a true weapon of death, equipped with five bullets tipped with red crystal. Mai had used this Philosopher’s Stone-enhanced bullet to snipe the heavily injured Dragon King, Norton, needing only a single shot.

“It’s in my hands now,” Mai said.

“I still need an ace sniper.”

“I am an ace sniper. I can hand over my responsibilities here to the others. Just tell me who the target is.”

“The target is our lovely bride.”

Mai’s hand, which had been stroking the rifle, suddenly trembled.

“Don’t be scared. I’m not so cruel as to send you to kill a beautiful young girl on a whim,” the boss said with a smile. “But the bride’s condition is becoming unstable. She could lose control at any moment, and you surely don’t want a rampaging demon wreaking havoc in Tokyo, do you? So, in the worst-case scenario, we’ll need to eliminate her. Another possibility is that if the Yamata no Orochi or the Oni Clan find them and we lose control over Uesugi Erii, we’ll have to eliminate her. She is one of the keys to unlocking the seal of the god. If she falls into the wrong hands, it could endanger millions in Tokyo, and possibly all of Japan. In such a case, you, as our ace sniper, will carry out your mission flawlessly, right?”

Mai took a deep breath. “You don’t need to explain all this to me. Just give the order, and I will follow it. Obeying orders is a ninja’s first duty.”

“Very good. I’ve always had faith in you. The trust between us is unbreakable. Keep your sights on our bride at all times, even during the wedding.”

“Understood. Do I have the authority to decide when to eliminate the Uesugi family head?”

The boss was silent for a few seconds before responding, “Let me know before you carry out the execution. Oh, by the way, they should be having dinner at Chateau Joel Robuchon tonight. Caesar has reserved a table for them. Head out with the sniper rifle before the evening rush begins.”

“I know where that restaurant is. I’ll find a suitable sniping position,” Mai replied.

“Hopefully, you won’t have to use those bullets,” the boss said before hanging up.

A few minutes later, Mai, dressed in black tactical gear, walked out the back door of Takamagahara. The garage door lifted, revealing a blue Lamborghini shining like sunlight. She tossed the gun case onto the passenger seat and drove out of the alley, merging into the heavy traffic of Tokyo’s evening rush, with light rain misting the streets.

At the same time, Lu Mingfei and Erii were stuck in a taxi, caught in the same heavy traffic. It was Lu Mingfei’s first time experiencing Tokyo’s infamous evening rush hour, and he realized that, like Beijing, this bustling metropolis had its share of gridlock.

Days of continuous rain had flooded several low-lying roads. Despite the emergency drainage, the roads were slick, and all the vehicles were moving cautiously. Several accidents along the way had only made the traffic worse.

Before today, Lu Mingfei thought Tokyo was amazing: clean streets, wide roads, no noise, no traffic jams, and people were polite. Even if you didn’t buy anything in a store, the staff treated you like a valued guest. But now, stuck in traffic with no way out, Lu Mingfei was frustrated. The elderly taxi driver seemed half asleep and hard of hearing. Despite Lu Mingfei repeatedly showing him the map and explaining the location of Chateau Joel Robuchon, the driver only knew the general area and offered to drop them nearby to find it themselves. As the reservation time approached, Lu Mingfei asked several times if they could take a faster route, but the driver shrugged and said, “Kid, this is Tokyo. Everyone wants to get there faster, but not everyone can have their way.”

Things hadn’t been like this a few days ago. The taxi drivers were all young, energetic men, sharp in their uniforms and spotless white gloves, handsome and upright. When Lu Mingfei would sit in the backseat and tell them the destination in his broken Japanese, the taxis would speed off immediately. If there was a traffic jam two kilometers ahead, someone would call the driver to suggest a detour. It was as if the map of Tokyo was etched into their brains; a quick turn of the steering wheel would lead to a side road, and after a few swift turns, they would emerge onto a wide, smooth road. When Lu Mingfei asked them to go faster, the drivers would get excited, stomping on the gas and roaring down the streets, overtaking car after car, risking speeding tickets without ever slamming on the brakes.

Looking back, Lu Mingfei realized that those taxi drivers had all been top-tier executive chauffeurs hired by Lu Mingze. Even though he was sitting in a taxi, he had been enjoying the treatment of a private luxury car.

With Lu Mingze’s influence, he had been a big shot in the city, able to command anything he wanted. But without Lu Mingze, he was nothing—just another nobody in a city of 13 million people. Why would anyone make way for him?

He could feel the pressure of the city now. In this massive metropolis, he was as insignificant as a speck of dust. His senior brothers were busy saving the world, but that had nothing to do with him. He had only been dragged into these major events by bad luck. His only real role was acting as a babysitter for the yakuza princess.

That afternoon, after he had vented his frustration at Lu Mingze through text, he had felt a bit guilty. Over the past few days, Lu Mingze had gone out of his way to handle things for him and Erii, though this level of attention had made Lu Mingfei uncomfortable. He admitted that his outburst had been impulsive. But now, when he tried to text Lu Mingze again, there was no reply. It turned out devils were quite literal creatures—when Lu Mingze said he would “smoothly roll away,” he really did, and the magic was gone. Lu Mingfei was once again the same useless guy he had always been.

Erii, on the other hand, wasn’t bothered by the traffic. Whenever she sat in the car, she would lean out the window, gazing at the rain-soaked, slightly gloomy city, which seemed vibrant and colorful to her. Every time a massive neon billboard flashed by, she would turn her head to follow it. Her expression was like that of a five- or six-year-old child seeing the world for the first time on a trip with their parents.

“The world outside is so big!” she wrote on a note and showed it to Lu Mingfei. She often wrote such notes, expressing her childlike wonder, whether it was seeing the Snow White castle at Disneyland or marveling at something else.

As Lu Mingfei watched her leaning against the window, he thought of McDull, the little piglet from My Life as McDull. McDull’s mother, Mrs. Mak, had raised him alone and didn’t have much money, so life was always tight. One day, McDull’s classmates came back from a trip to the Maldives, proudly talking about the blue skies, white clouds, coconut trees, and crystal-clear waters of this paradise in the Indian Ocean. McDull, enchanted by their stories, dreamed of going there too. When McDull became seriously ill, Mrs. Mak, afraid he wouldn’t survive, encouraged him, saying, “When you get better, I’ll take you to the Maldives.” McDull fought hard to recover, and when he finally did, Mrs. Mak didn’t have the money to take him. Instead, she brought him to the top of Victoria Peak and told him, “This is the Maldives.” McDull rode the tram, saw the harbor, and enjoyed the birds and flowers. It was the happiest day of his life.
