The brightly lit train roared into the night, its whistle echoing as it went. Erii stood at the window, holding her Rilakkuma plush and waving with its furry paw.

“Distance: approximately 1,100 meters. Wind direction: west to east. Wind speed: 3.6 meters per second. Humidity: 45%. Target remains locked.”

“Distance: approximately 1,300 meters. Wind direction: west to east. Wind speed: 3.8 meters per second. Humidity: 44%. Fog forming! Visibility decreasing! Target is leaving effective range!”

“Distance: approximately 1,500 meters. Wind direction: west to east. Wind speed: 3.7 meters per second. Humidity: 44%. Heavy fog! Visibility severely reduced! Target has reached the edge of effective range!”

Mai’s forehead was beaded with cold sweat, her finger numb on the trigger. The call had connected, though the signal was weak. Still, it was enough to speak to the boss, but the boss remained silent.

She didn’t want to shoot Erii, but with Tokyo—and possibly all of Japan—at stake, sacrificing one person seemed insignificant. The boss must have been contemplating. This situation had clearly exceeded even his calculations, forcing him to rethink and make a decision on the spot.

But time was running out. The AS50, renowned for its 1.5-mile range, could shoot accurately at a distance of about 2.4 kilometers. The train would be out of range in two minutes, but the fog and wind would reduce its effective range. Even for a top-tier sniper like her, guaranteeing a hit in these conditions was impossible.

“Final reminder, the target is about to move out of effective range,” Mai whispered.

“Let her go,” the boss sighed softly, with a hint of amusement in his voice. “Our good actor, Lu Mingfei, has finally broken free from my script and done something he truly wanted. How could I not let him have his wish?”

Mai still hadn’t moved the crosshair from Erii’s forehead, though at this distance, the shot was no longer guaranteed: “But, boss, you said she was the key to unlocking the Well of Bones. Are you willing to let that key fall into someone else’s hands?”

“What is there to fear? So what if the gods revive? When the battle of armies begins, I will personally face them!” the boss said in a deep voice. Suddenly, he was the emperor on the stage again, commanding the world with every pause and word.

“Then let us await the wrath of the heavens,” Mai murmured as she slowly reset the gun’s mechanism. By this time, the brightly lit iron dragon had vanished into the thick fog rolling in from the sea.

Lu Mingfei fished a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the payphone on the platform. He dialed the number written in his notebook: “Tortoise? Send someone to pick up your sister. She’s on the 9:45 last train from Meidzujimachi back to Tokyo.”

He didn’t wait for Chisei’s reply before hanging up. He dusted off his pants, took out his car keys, and leisurely walked toward the parking lot.

He never bought himself a ticket back to Tokyo.
