“Having the wedding at Meiji Shrine was the boss’s idea, right?” Su Enxi asked slowly. “The same venue Caesar chose for his wedding.”

“Yes. That wedding planning agency was also handpicked by the boss. They’re the only ones in Japan who can pull off a wedding at Meiji Shrine. The shrine is under the royal family’s jurisdiction, managed by the Imperial Household Agency, and the wedding agency is actually run by the agency itself.”

“Sometimes I think the boss is a jerk, but other times I feel like he’s practically Lu Mingfei’s father.”

“Why do you say that all of a sudden?”

“Don’t you think he really cares about Lu Mingfei’s feelings?” Su Enxi glanced at Mai. “Think about how Lu Mingfei must have felt when he found out Caesar planned to have his wedding at Meiji Shrine. It must’ve hurt. But as a broke, powerless guy, there’s nothing he could do, only watch as the girl he likes holds hands with someone else, exchanging vows and rings, entrusting her life to another man in the grand setting of Meiji Shrine. If he were really just a broke loser, he’d have no choice but to accept it. But he’s under the boss’s protection. This time, the boss is deliberately targeting Caesar, finding a better bride for Lu Mingfei, creating the perfect love story, and planning an even grander wedding… It’s like a kid having a petty competition with someone.”

Mai paused for a moment.

“I can’t figure it out either. All this time, Lu Mingfei has been the boss’s puppet, helping him step by step to achieve his plan. But usually, a puppet is discarded in the end. That’s just common sense. But this time, the boss is acting very strange. It seems like he really wants to find a girl for Lu Mingfei and is going to great lengths to make her fall in love with him. He’s orchestrating a rivalry between Lu Mingfei and Caesar, but he doesn’t actually need to. Caesar and Nono’s engagement has nothing to do with our plan,” Su Enxi said quietly. “The only explanation is that Caesar’s high profile has angered the boss. The puppeteer doesn’t like seeing someone bully his puppet… But do you see the boss as a sentimental type?”

“No. From the moment I met him, he’s always been a tyrant,” Mai replied firmly, her voice low but resolute.

At this time, her cell phone rang, but there was no caller ID.

“You’ve worked hard, ladies! How are our bride and groom doing?” The boss’s voice was as lively and playful as always.

“Everything is proceeding according to your plan. The expert team is fully assembled. There wasn’t much progress today, but starting tomorrow, the operation code-named ‘Tokyo Love Story’ will officially begin.”

“With such a strong team of experts backing them, how long until they fall in love?”

“We’re aiming for half a month.”

“Seven days.”

At that moment, they would likely feel their efforts were worthwhile, shedding tears of joy and wishing the couple a lifetime of happiness together.

But in reality, it was just a new trick thought up by their crazy boss to toy with people.

“The Tokyo Skytree lighting up in the rain—was that one of your tricks?” Su Enxi asked, coming closer.

“Yep. The TBS rerun of Tokyo Love Story was also our doing. That guy who looks like an artist, Takeomi Kenshi, said that love needs divine intervention, so we’re creating small details that can spark their emotions,” Mai pointed toward the handsome man with long hair. “Like suddenly seeing an old romantic show on TV or fireworks lighting up the sky on a rainy night—these little things can touch people’s hearts. That’s what we call divine intervention, the small sparks that ignite love.”

“What’s that guy’s background? He said he was unemployed, but he’s pretty good-looking.”

“Takeomi Kenshi, known as Japan’s top love guru. He has a late-night show on Asahi TV called Love Bible, and countless women are head over heels in love with him. He’s incredibly skilled at understanding women’s psychology. If Lu Mingfei had just a third of his charm, he’d be able to win over Uesugi Erii.”

“You’re really pulling out all the stops to help Lu Mingfei chase after girls!”

“Let’s just say the boss is the one pulling out all the stops. Does this sound like something I’d come up with? These are all elite experts handpicked by the boss, and their names were sent directly to my phone. My job is to invite them under the pretense of producing a TV show.”

“The photoshoot is done.” The makeup artist rushed over, handing Mai the simulated photos. “The bride has great natural features, but it’s clear she has no experience with makeup. We’re considering giving her a forest-inspired look, with some emphasis on her eyes and lips.”

“The forest theme gives too cold an impression. The bride is already an ice queen; we don’t need to make her any colder. Make it sexy! Warm tones!” Mai immediately rejected the proposal. “We need to awaken the groom’s primal desire!”

“The bride’s wardrobe pairing is ready,” the fashion stylist approached with sketches. “Since this is Tokyo Love Story, we’re going for the trendy Tokyo style. These clothes are readily available in stores.”

“Shorten the skirt by 10 centimeters,” Mai tossed back the sketches.

“A vacation getaway would significantly enhance their relationship. A hot spring near Tokyo would be a good idea,” the relationship consultant raised his hand to suggest.

“Rejected. The bride’s health isn’t great. They can go out during the day, but they must return to the hotel at night!”

Proposals were continuously drafted and shot down, with only a few managing to survive Mai’s scrutiny. She introduced a bonus system: the less time the expert team needed to make the bride and groom fall for each other, the higher the bonus they would receive. Thus, the experts pulled out all the stops, coming up with ideas ranging from the romantic to the risqué. The manager from the wedding agency, Hatada, hadn’t yet had the chance to contribute, but he couldn’t leave the command center until the show was over. Frustrated, he resorted to working out with a pair of dumbbells in the corner, anxiously waiting for the moment when Lu Mingfei would confess and Erii would say yes, so he could jump in and start planning the wedding.

“We have only seven days. Within six days, they must fall in love, and on the seventh day at sunset, their wedding will take place,” the boss chuckled. “Uesugi Erii is a peerless beauty; every man should love her.”

“But Chen Motong’s influence on Lu Mingfei is too strong.”

“I read in a book that there are 20,000 people in the world with whom you could fall in love at first sight, but you might never meet even one of them in your lifetime. Love at first sight isn’t magic; it’s fate. Chen Motong was the first person on Lu Mingfei’s destiny line, and I hope Uesugi Erii will be the second. The first time we encounter fate, we’re caught off guard, so we fail miserably. The second time, we are fully prepared. We cannot fail at the same thing twice,” the boss said slowly.

“Of course, if we do fail, it’s still good. That just means our dear little angel Lu Mingfei will fall even deeper into the abyss of despair!” In an instant, the boss switched to his usual lascivious and gleeful tone.

“Is seven days the hard deadline?” Mai asked.

She didn’t fully grasp the meaning behind the boss’s words, but the order had been clearly delivered. Ninjas, like soldiers, don’t question the reasons behind a command as long as the orders are clear.

“Yes, let’s just hope the bride lives until the wedding day.” The boss hung up.

Su Enxi and Mai exchanged glances. The boss’s words had conveyed an obvious implication: Uesugi Erii might not have much time left.

Mai was right. The boss had always been a tyrant. He was never sentimental, nor did he waste energy on trivial matters. Once again, the gift he was giving to Lu Mingfei was tainted with poison.
