Dragon Raja 3

Although Lu Mingfei wasn’t keen on falling into the hands of Yamata no Orochi, he was now also a wanted terrorist by the police, so getting captured by the police wasn’t exactly a better fate. Chisei had even said that Yamata no Orochi had allies in the police force, so the police might just hand him over to them. He hadn’t yet figured out whether he should seek help from the police or surrender to the underworld when fully armed SWAT officers began descending from the helicopter, charging toward them. The officers wore black combat uniforms with bulletproof vests marked “MPD,” helmets, and submachine guns strapped to their chests. They were clearly the elite of the police force. Lu Mingfei quickly hid his gun in a ventilation pipe and raised his hands high in the air.

The SWAT team reached Lu Mingfei in seconds, and without a word, hoisted both him and Erii onto their shoulders, shouting “Survivors found!” as they rushed back to the helicopter.

Lu Mingfei was baffled. What do you mean, survivors? We were just standing on the rooftop, enjoying the wind and the night view!

The SWAT officers tossed them into the helicopter, immediately putting oxygen masks on their faces. The doors closed, and the officers shouted for takeoff. The pilot pulled up on the controls, and the helicopter shot into the sky. The entire rescue took less than half a minute.

By the time the agents from the Execution Bureau broke through the iron door to the rooftop, their black trench coats flapping wildly in the wind like the tail feathers of crows, they could only watch helplessly as the MPD helicopter circled the Genji Heavy Industries building. None of them dared to open fire on a police helicopter. Through the helicopter’s cabin window, Lu Mingfei could see the man in the lead angrily waving a Colt revolver.

“Relax, don’t be afraid. You’re safe now. Take a deep breath. Yes, deep breath,” one of the SWAT officers said, shaking Lu Mingfei firmly. “Look at me, focus.”

Medical personnel shone flashlights in Lu Mingfei and Erii’s eyes, gave a thumbs up, and then checked their blood pressure and reflexes. They passed all the tests easily. The medic even tapped a metal rod near Lu Mingfei’s ear to check his hearing, and he nodded to indicate that he heard perfectly well. Honestly, what’s the chance that getting rained on would damage my hearing?

After a few more minutes of full-body checks, despite being perfectly fine and even full of energy, the SWAT team and medics treated them as though they had just been dug out of earthquake rubble, barely hanging on to life.

Lu Mingfei couldn’t help but wonder if he had somehow been injured, but after patting himself down, he realized he wasn’t feeling any pain anywhere.

“HQ, HQ! Dolphin Squad reporting! We’ve rescued a couple from the Genji Heavy Industries building! They’re both in great health! We’re returning to base!” The SWAT captain grabbed the radio, speaking in an enthusiastic voice.

“HQ copies, HQ copies. You’re cleared for return, cleared for return,” a cold female voice came from the radio, and Lu Mingfei couldn’t shake the feeling that the voice sounded familiar.

“We… we’re just flying away like this?” Lu Mingfei asked cautiously.

“Don’t worry, other teams will rescue the people still trapped in the building. We got a call saying the earthquake had collapsed some of the passageways in Genji Heavy Industries, trapping people on the rooftop, so we sent the helicopter for the rescue. You’re really lucky—HQ’s phone lines are completely jammed right now,” the SWAT officer, a lively and chatty man, said as he took off his helmet. “Don’t worry about your friends on the rooftop, other squads will take care of them. This helicopter is already full.”

Indeed, the helicopter was packed. From the SWAT captain to the officers and medics, everyone smiled warmly at Lu Mingfei and Erii… Lu Mingfei thought to himself, Seriously? This is a seven-seater helicopter, and five spots are already taken by the rescue team. No wonder they could only take two people! The Tokyo police must be out of their minds!

“Done. Dolphin Squad has rescued the couple. They’re heading back and will drop them off at the University of Tokyo Hospital,” Mai said as she hung up the phone and stretched.

“You sure have connections in Japan. How’d you manage to get an MPD helicopter on such short notice? Some high-ranking officer at the MPD looking to ask you out?” Su Enxi teased, lounging on the sofa in disheveled clothes, reading a book.

“That wasn’t an MPD helicopter. Every MPD helicopter is logged with the control tower, and if they check the records later, they’d find discrepancies. I just hired a helicopter and had it repainted.”

“Well, that’s a clever and cheap solution. So those cops weren’t real either? Can we trust them?”

“The people are reliable,” Mai raised her eyebrows, “just a bit chatty. It’s an occupational hazard for them—they work for a tour company specializing in helicopter sightseeing tours. Tourism folks, you know, they can’t stop talking.”

“You hired a bunch of tour guides for the rescue?”

“Dedicated, top-notch tour guides.”

Su Enxi wanted to comment but didn’t know where to start, so she just shrugged and said, “Oh!”

“I have to say, you two really make a perfect couple. My grandmother has an eye for reading couples, and if she saw you two, she’d say you were made for each other.”

“It’s pretty romantic to be on a rooftop with such a beautiful girl. Back in high school, I’d take girls to the rooftop for dates all the time. From our rooftop, you could even see Mount Fuji—really the perfect place to seal the deal,” another SWAT officer chimed in.

“Everyone says that surviving a disaster brings good fortune, right? You two have gone through life and death together—there’s no way you’re not meant to be together, haha!” The SWAT officer’s voice was full of teasing laughter.

The helicopter flew straight toward the University of Tokyo, where, they said, injured citizens from the earthquake were receiving more thorough medical checkups. The entire time, the SWAT team kept chatting, convinced that Lu Mingfei and Erii were a couple, and genuinely believing they were a match made in heaven. Lu Mingfei glanced at his reflection and had to admit that Erii could definitely pass as a heavenly beauty, but he himself as the “golden boy” left much to be desired. Despite the awkwardness, it was hard not to feel a little flattered—it was the first time in his life someone had called him handsome and dashing, and it gave him a small ego boost.

“We’re approaching the University of Tokyo,” the SWAT captain turned from the front seat and locked eyes with Lu Mingfei.

Just as Lu Mingfei worried that the guy might be about to ask for his ID, the captain’s voice rang out instead, “The University of Tokyo is a historic institution, founded during the Meiji era. Its predecessors were Tokyo Kaisei University and Tokyo Medical School, and if you trace it back further, it was originally the ‘Astronomy Department’ during the shogunate era. In 1877, it was formally restructured as a university. The University of Tokyo is Japan’s premier academic institution, and many national leaders have graduated from here. Please look below; we’re now flying over the iconic ‘Akamon’ (Red Gate). We’ll fly a bit lower so you can enjoy the night view of Akamon… Would you like me to take a picture for you as a souvenir?” The captain waved a camera enthusiastically.
