Dragon Raja 3

“In fact, you would also spend every penny in your account, but I’ve never felt uncomfortable about it. I look forward to you asking me to borrow money or simply moving into my rented apartment, but you never ask; you’d rather just eat canned soup to get by until your family sends you money next month. Everything you do seems interesting to me. When we’re on the street, I guess which restaurant you’ll choose, but I can never get it right. The more I can’t guess, the more I want to try. You are the highest achievement I want to challenge in my life because I have never understood you fully. You’re like a sorceress; you have countless possibilities. I actually fear that after we get married, you will have no more secrets from me. I would know you as thoroughly as I knew that girl, and I would grow weary at some point.

“To overcome this fear, I’ve thought of many methods, even calling my psychologist. But the psychologist said, as a man who has been married for many years, the experience is that sooner or later, you will tire of your wife; whether you divorce her or not depends on your patience rather than love. But I don’t want to tire of you. When I met you, you were as beautiful as light; if you dimmed because of being with me, that would be an insult to the light. Although I’m afraid, I’m still planning our wedding. I didn’t tell you in advance because I haven’t been able to reach you lately. I hope that after you learn of my fears and hesitations, you will still be willing to say ‘I do’ with me and then travel the world for our year-long wedding. But if you were in front of me, I wouldn’t be able to say these things to you, and if you hear this recording, I may have already died. So this is a paradox.

“I know you Chinese have the custom of ghost marriages, but I don’t want you to engage in such ridiculous things. Of course, I know you wouldn’t do that, which is why you are the girl I like. But I have already paid for the wedding services, and I feel you shouldn’t waste it. Please travel the world for me if you’re willing, wearing a red men’s Tang suit. When you watch the sunset on your little island in Fiji, hang it on the clothesline beside you and watch it dance in the air, imagining me watching the sunset with you. If there really is a soul or something in the world, I would overcome my fears and be filled with joy, because I have left the best moments in your memory, and I could never tire of you.

Love, Caesar Gattuso, deep in the Japan Trench.”

The Trieste finally broke free from the currents; it entered the rising stream like a rejuvenated bird soaring upwards.

“I heard you wrote a book privately and it made it to the bestseller list of The New York Times?” Chu Zihang said casually.

“Dragon Raja, it’s still ranked third. I plan to release the third book in the series after completing this mission. I mean, if I survive,” Caesar replied. “Can you not be bored enough to eavesdrop on someone else’s farewell letter?”

“I know it’s not very polite, but your writing is indeed very good, although your Chinese word choice is sometimes inaccurate.”

“How can you pursue a Chinese girl without working hard to learn Chinese? Chu Zihang, don’t you want to record a message too? Or do you Chinese people think leaving a farewell letter is an unlucky thing?”

“I’ve already recorded one, but it’s not on the public channel, so you didn’t hear it,” Chu Zihang said. “It’s very short; I can play it back for you.”

He pressed the playback button: “Dad, by the time you hear this recording, I will no longer be in this world. Please do not investigate the cause of my death, as it won’t yield any results and isn’t important. This is my own choice; no one has forced me. Please take good care of Mom and don’t let her be too sad. I know you and Mom had an agreement not to have children for my sake, but at your age, having a child shouldn’t be a problem. Having a baby would make both her and you happier. Thank you for taking care of me all these years; I know you’re proud of me.”

“Your farewell letter is actually for your stepfather and not your mother?” Caesar said.

“Actually, there’s nothing I want to say to my mom. She doesn’t have the bloodline and wouldn’t understand what we’re doing. Saying sentimental things would only make her feel sad every time she hears it,” Chu Zihang replied. “My stepfather is a very rational person; he would find a way to persuade my mom to have another child. That way, they wouldn’t be lonely.”

“Don’t you feel a bit sad thinking that someone will take your place, and they’ll be a happy family of three?” Lu Mingfei felt a twinge of heartache.

“No one is irreplaceable, and there’s nothing to be sad about,” Chu Zihang said lightly. “Lu Mingfei, do you want to record a message?”

“I thought about recording one, but I haven’t figured out who to record it for,” Lu Mingfei scratched his head.

Chisei leaned against the railing with a cigarette in his mouth, silently listening to the conversation from the depths of the sea.
