Dragon Raja 3

Lu Mingfei knelt on the invisible wall, feeling like a dog that had its spine ripped out. Even at the very end, she was still calling his name, a ridiculous pseudonym. He was the greatest hero in her life, but he had come too late.

When the sobbing finally faded, the cocoon Herzog had spun was torn open from the inside by a pure white claw. A perfect creature burst from the crack, spreading its white membranous wings in the air. It hovered in the well, resembling a giant cross, the reflections from its scales illuminating the darkness.

Its horns were sharp and magnificent, elegant yet dangerous, somewhere between an angel and a demon. Even when Xia Mi transformed into a dragon, she had never been as perfect as this. He was the new White Empress, White Empress Herzog, a magnificent being second only to the gods, ruling over all. In the era without the Black Emperor, he was the world’s throne!

A fierce wind swept across the stage as Herzog soared into the sky, crashing through the roof of the Kabuki Theater and disappearing into the rainy sky.

“So I said, Brother, you’re too late,” Lu Mingze said eerily. No wonder he dressed this way and wore no smile. Tonight, he was indeed here to attend a funeral.

Lu Mingfei stood in the deepest part of the Red Well, surrounded by white silk threads, like an enormous spider’s nest. Rain fell from the sky and soaked the earth, washing away the blood. Not far from him were two human figures tightly embracing each other. Even in the final moments, Chime still held Chisei close, whether seeking his brother’s warmth out of fear or trying to comfort his brother, trapped in a nightmare, remains unclear.

Further away, the shape of a girl could be vaguely seen inside a nearly transparent cocoon.

He dragged his heavy steps forward, using his hands to tear apart the white threads, completely unaware that his hands were being corroded. He dug out the withered Uesugi Erii from the cocoon, removed his own shiny little suit, and wrapped it around her bare body.

He held her tightly, and after a long, long time, he began to weep silently.

Lu Mingze hadn’t taken him to the Kabuki Theater at all; it had all been an illusion. He eventually reached the Red Well and witnessed the tragic ending in the illusory Kabuki Theater. He had come too late; the real tragedy had already played out before he arrived, and there was nothing he could change.

“Although I would still love to have your soul, Brother, I can’t change what has already happened. All my deals only affect the future. So, regret it—you came too late,” Lu Mingze leaned against the wall of the well, arms crossed, gazing up at the rainy sky. “This spring is coming to an end. You were supposed to encounter the best thing in your life at the end of this season, but you missed the chance.”

“Do you understand now? Without power or authority, you can accomplish nothing. You were meant to be a roaring monster in this world, but you chose to hide your claws and be a useless fool.”

“To be born a monster and die a good person, or to live as a good person and die a monster—which is the more tragic end?” Lu Mingze seemed to casually discuss life’s questions with him.

Lu Mingfei turned Uesugi Erii over and found the scorpion-like parasite between her sixth and seventh vertebrae. Through her skin, it felt like a hard lump. It had ultimately chosen this spot to parasitize, connecting its nerve fibers with Erii’s spine, gaining control of her body, and injecting the core genes of the White Empress into her. Lu Mingfei picked up a discarded short knife and carefully cut into that spot, trying to remove the already withered dragon bone. He didn’t want that filthy thing left in Erii’s body.

Fortunately, there was hardly any blood left in Erii’s body. Cutting through her skin and pale muscle fibers didn’t cause any bleeding, which made Lu Mingfei feel slightly better. But the dragon bone was so tightly fused with her spine that they had practically become one. He didn’t dare use too much force, fearing that the girl might still feel pain, so he could only use the knife to slowly sever the tentacle-like thin bones connecting the dragon bone. He finally extracted the dragon bone and slammed it onto the ground, stabbing at it furiously with the knife. But the ordinary blade had little effect on the dragon bone, only sparking slightly at the tip. Like a madman, he ran off to get metal tools, smashing it with a hammer, burning it with a blowtorch, and freezing it with liquid nitrogen, putting all his strength into breaking the bone.

Lu Mingze was very helpful, bringing over a hammer, pliers, and blowtorch as Lu Mingfei needed. When Lu Mingfei hammered, he held the bone steady with the pliers; when one was using the blowtorch, the other was ready with the liquid nitrogen, alternating between high and low temperatures to kill the thing.

At that moment, they truly looked like brothers—one mad enough, the other ruthless enough, working together in perfect harmony. If they decided to destroy something or someone, it would be too easy.

After using every tool at their disposal, the dragon bone finally turned into a pile of white powder, mixed with small charred fragments. The once-great relic was no longer moving, having been completely destroyed by the brothers. In truth, it had already died long ago. Many parasites are like this: full of vitality when they haven’t found a suitable host, but once they find one, they enter the reproduction stage, losing the ability to move and eventually dying. By now, its genes had already been implanted in Herzog’s body, and its mission was complete.

Lu Mingfei had wished it would at least resist a little, like a bug full of juice that could be crushed with a satisfying “pop.” That would have brought him some feeling of revenge. But the dragon bone offered no resistance, lifeless like a dead pig that couldn’t feel boiling water.

He dropped the hammer in his hand, walked back to Erii, and picked her up, silent, lost in thought, or perhaps with a blank mind.

“It’s too late to get angry now. If you had acted thirty minutes earlier, you could have changed the outcome of this story. But what were you doing then? Drinking, hesitating, comforting yourself. By the time you made up your mind, it was already too late.”

“How many times have I told you? Never let an opportunity slip by. There are already so few people in this world you care about, and even fewer who care about you.”

“Alright then, keep your quarter of a life. I can’t take it, but you won’t be able to use it to bring that girl back either,” Lu Mingze continued to ramble.

Though his words were nothing but aimless grumbling and complaints, his voice sounded distant, like a ballad sung by a bard by the fireside.
