“Perhaps your encounter with Miss Chen was coincidental, but your friendship with Lu Mingfei was inevitable. You two have completely different lives and personalities, yet you crossed paths. That’s all I wanted to say. The connection has been restored, and you can resume the meeting whenever you’re ready. You’re the council member, and the decision is yours.” Parsi gave a slight bow. “Lastly, young master, rest assured. If the day comes when you drive off again, no matter who you’re going to save, I’ll be by your side, armed and ready.”

Parsi left the room, and Caesar sat in silence for a long time before getting up and walking to the window. There, on a stand, hung a cheap-looking kimono.

Caesar smiled to himself, remembering how they had worn such cheap clothes, holding umbrellas, proudly heading to Tokyo like a group of swordsmen on a mission.

The Tokyo trip had taught them many lessons and made them friends, but in the end, they took different paths. Caesar had a seat in the council, while Lu Mingfei chose the life of a fugitive. Parsi was right; they had never belonged to the same world. How had they even become friends? Caesar had entrusted him with the role of Student Union president and even the dance troupe.

Yet it was hard to truly understand how it all happened. If he had to recall, all that came to mind were memories of them bathing, drinking, and singing karaoke with wealthy women in Japan. Lu Mingfei had taken that girl to the mountains to watch the sunset, and Caesar had followed along in a beat-up Toyota as their bodyguard. Was that really the kind of bond that deserved the friendship of Caesar Gattuso? Oh, and Lu Mingfei had once taken a bullet for him, but oddly enough, that didn’t seem as important. Friendship and gratitude weren’t the same thing.

When exactly did his perception of that guy begin to change? Even when the Nibelungen Plan was used on him, Caesar had felt happy for him.

Caesar patted his head. “The human brain is like an unreliable hard drive; it always slowly demagnetizes.” It seemed a friend had once said this to him, though he couldn’t quite remember who.

He returned to his seat in front of the camera and rejoined the meeting.

Parsi entered an empty conference room and took out his phone. It had been vibrating in his pocket the entire time he was talking to Caesar, but he hadn’t answered it. Now, he had to return the call.

“Caesar voted against the motion to issue a warrant for Lu Mingfei. Although the warrant was still issued, it’s only a B-level warrant. This means we can’t use EVA’s full computational power to track Lu Mingfei. I need to know what Caesar is thinking, and what he said to you during the ten minutes you weren’t answering the phone.”

Alpha’s authoritative voice came through the call.

“I advised the young master to consider his vote carefully, using his friendship with Lu Mingfei as a reason to persuade him,” Parsi replied respectfully.

“Who gave you permission to act on your own?” Alpha’s voice suddenly became stern.

“If the warrant were S-level, it would mean the hunters could use any means necessary, even killing the target wouldn’t matter. That would also put Miss Chen in danger. Caesar is still calm right now, but if something were to happen to Miss Chen, he would undoubtedly fly to the scene immediately, and no one would be able to stop him. That’s not something we want to see. We should resolve this quietly. Though the B-level warrant is insufficient, the family can send its own hunters.”

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone. “You’ve thought this through carefully. Do you have any recommendations for the hunters?”

“We can’t send anyone too obvious, only assassins—those strong and loyal enough. There aren’t many in the family’s talent pool who fit this description. I believe I’m qualified for this.”

“Your most important task is to stay by Caesar’s side and ensure he remains under our watch. We will assign someone else for this matter.” Alpha hung up the phone.
