Dragon Raja 4; Chapter 101: Gate of the Nibelungen (5)

Dragon Raja 4

He didn’t know what kind of attack Gungnir would unleash, but he knew he needed to dodge it. Yet the injury to his left knee slowed him down.

The flower of lightning suddenly bloomed, and its electric tendrils shot out in all directions. At that moment, someone slammed into Lu Mingfei from the side, knocking him rolling to the ground.

It was Nono. When the spirits raised their arms in celebration, she had been freed. She couldn’t sense the deadly aura of Gungnir and didn’t understand why Lu Mingfei had suddenly frozen, so she rushed in without hesitation. By the time she tried to evade, Odin had already struck. The flash of lightning illuminated her pale face as countless bolts struck her chest from all sides, exploding into countless white and purple sparks. Lu Mingfei wanted to scream but couldn’t make a sound—his mind was blank, as if his very blood vessels and nerves had frozen.

Nono slowly knelt in the water, looking down at the wound on her chest. It took Lu Mingfei a few seconds to drag his injured leg over to her, grabbing her in his arms. “Senior sister! Senior sister!”

Nono pushed him away, staring dumbfounded at the chest of her uniform. The terrifying lightning strike had only burned a coin-sized black hole beneath her chest.

“Senior sister! Senior sister!” Lu Mingfei staggered back, trying to examine her wound.

Nono quickly covered the hole with her hand. “Go home and examine Finger instead!” she snapped, then sprang to her feet with a tiger-like leap.

Her dark red eyes sparkled. She looked completely energized—the lightning strike hadn’t harmed her; it almost seemed to have charged her up.

With the tension temporarily relieved, Lu Mingfei collapsed onto the ground in the rain, panting heavily. He lay back in the puddle, exhausted.

The tip of Gungnir slowly lowered, and Odin’s towering form slumped on the back of his horse. Thick white smoke billowed from the gaps in his armor as Sleipnir reared and retreated. The spirits rushed forward, tightly surrounding their master. Odin looked as if he had exhausted all his strength in that earth-shattering strike and was now in a state of extreme weakness. But was Lu Mingfei, with a broken leg, really worth Odin’s full power? And Nono, who seemed only slightly scratched? Something felt off to Lu Mingfei, but there wasn’t time to think about it.

Nono, eager to fight again, looked ready to strike Odin, but Lu Mingfei grabbed her wrist, stopping her from making a reckless move. Even if Odin was weakened, they wouldn’t be able to break through the spirits guarding him. According to Lu Mingze’s rules, the Wild Hunt should end here. Odin’s fatal strike had failed to kill him, granting him the right to leave the hunting grounds. He pulled Nono along, slowly retreating. The spirits parted to let them pass, and the only sound in the oppressive silence was the endless rain.

Lu Mingfei led Nono over to the Maybach and gestured for her to take the passenger seat. She immediately understood his plan—whatever miracle had happened with this car before, it might just happen again. Even though the Ferrari was faster, in Nibelungen, time and space were no longer reliable.

No one moved to stop them. The spirits’ eyes followed them as they moved, rain clattering against their armor, creating a sound like iron wind chimes.

The car showed no signs of damage, and the seats still carried a faint warmth. As soon as they sat down, the screen lit up, and the car’s computer started automatically.

“Do you have the car keys?” Nono asked in a low voice, as if afraid to wake the sleeping dead.

Lu Mingfei froze at the question. He’d forgotten about that detail and started fumbling around the dashboard. Then he remembered Chu Zihang had once said this car was voice-activated.

He tapped the screen. “Hello? Can you do me a favor and start the engine?”

“It’s a car computer, not your secretary Miss Isabel! You have to use a commanding tone!” Nono retorted, exasperated.

“Alright, alright! Start engine!” Lu Mingfei tried imitating Chu Zihang’s voice, but the Maybach still didn’t respond.

He thought for a moment, remembering the car was made by Mercedes-Benz, and switched to his not-so-great German: “Motor starten.”

“Запусти двигатель.” He even threw in some Russian, given that he had picked up a bit of the language from all those late-night snacks with Zero over the years.

“Why not try Japanese while you’re at it?” Nono sighed, holding her forehead.

“エンジンをかける?” Lu Mingfei instinctively replied.

“You’re seriously a little translator, huh?” Nono grabbed the back of his neck. “This is a custom car! It only responds to the owner’s language!”

“I was overthinking it!” Lu Mingfei smacked the steering wheel. “Start! Ignite! Fire up!”

Not knowing the exact activation command for the car, he rattled off every possible phrase he could think of, not sure if his imitation of Chu Zihang’s voice would fool the car’s computer.

The Maybach trembled slightly, its exhaust emitting a deep roar, and the car’s computer calmly said, “Welcome back.”

Lu Mingfei was overjoyed. He remembered Chu Zihang mentioning that the car was set to only be started by three specific voices, and that the third voice pattern was left empty as a backup, but Chu Zihang’s father had secretly recorded Chu Zihang’s voice into it. Apparently, even though this was a luxury car from over a decade ago, its security wasn’t flawless. Lu Mingfei’s imitation had worked.

The Maybach glided silently through the ranks of the spirits, and the wall of decayed flesh, metal armor, and black cloaks parted before them, seemingly endless.

Lu Mingfei and Nono both gripped their guns tightly; they were down to their last few bullets. Through the windows, countless golden eyes, flickering like flames, stared silently at them.

“How much was that Ferrari worth?” Lu Mingfei asked Nono in a hushed voice.

“How should I know? I told you, I borrowed it.”

The Maybach was passing by the Ferrari, and Lu Mingfei lowered the window, firing repeatedly into the Ferrari’s gas tank.

With a deafening explosion, a fiery blast of debris swept through the nearby spirits, and the wreckage of the Ferrari burned fiercely.

The wall of spirits finally loosened. Lu Mingfei slammed on the gas pedal, and the engine roared as the RPMs spiked into the red zone. The tires screeched as they gripped the ground, and the Maybach plowed through the spirits, who were initially calm but now enraged. However, despite their fury, they were still, in some form, human, and couldn’t compete with the raw power of this “business-suit thug” of a luxury car.

Lu Mingfei rammed them against the guardrail, shifted gears, and pulled back before slamming into them again, finally breaking through the barrier and sending a few spirits tumbling off the overpass.

The once-illustrious Maybach, one of the world’s top luxury cars, had now been turned into a bulldozer by Lu Mingfei. As it spun through the spirits, the sound of bones breaking filled the air.

Lu Mingfei blew the smoke from his gun’s muzzle and tossed the Desert Eagle onto the dashboard. “I just want to know how much those shots cost me.”

“A few million? Maybe ten million? Shao Yifeng’s cars are all super expensive—you probably can’t afford to pay him back,” Nono shrugged.

“Great! I wasn’t planning on paying anyway!”

As they finally broke through the encirclement of spirits, they high-fived in excitement, hearts filled with the joy of escaping death.

The Maybach sped along the overpass as Lu Mingfei opened the sunroof, letting the rain wash away the black blood covering him.

The compound fracture in his left knee was still healing, but the effects of Don’t die dulled the pain, and the bleeding inside and out had already scabbed over.

Nono took off her stockings and wrapped them around the arm that had been corroded by the spirits’ blood. Lu Mingfei handed her his coat, and she took it without hesitation, slipping it on. While the trench coat had been custom-made for him in a London boutique, the material was provided by the Execution Bureau. It was durable, resistant to corrosion, and woven with fine metallic fibers. Though it wasn’t bulletproof, regular blades would simply slide off. Nono’s cute school uniform, on the other hand, had been shredded into tatters during the battle.

The headlights illuminated the space a dozen meters ahead, beyond which lay nothing but darkness. The sounds of wind, rain, and swaying trees filled the world around them.

Nono leaned back in her seat and let out a long sigh. “It’s unbelievable. They actually managed to train you into the kind of person the college needs.”

“The kind of person the college needs? What kind of person does the college need?” Lu Mingfei asked, frowning as he focused on the road ahead.

“You and Caesar, at first, neither of you were the kind of people the college needed, but you both became something different from who you were,” Nono said, looking out the window.

Lu Mingfei’s heart stirred as he recalled that many years ago, it had been Chu Zihang washing his wounds in the rain. Back then, he thought Chu Zihang was cool and fierce. Now, doing the same things himself, it all felt natural.
