Municipal Third Hospital, an empty hallway, the air filled with the smell of disinfectant.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor, approaching the nurse’s station. The person stopped in front of it and picked up a small bell, giving it a shake.

“Do you need something?” A drowsy nurse looked up.

“I’m back to be admitted. Didn’t I just take a leave earlier?” Lu Mingfei placed his leave slip on the desk. “Came back a little late; the roads were bad because of the rain.”

“You really came back, huh? Are you crazy?” The nurse stared at him in disbelief.

She hadn’t expected him to return at all. Su Xiaoqian’s idea was just to take him away, but they went through the motions to not make it difficult for the nurse.

“Of course I’m crazy. If I weren’t, why would I be staying here?” Lu Mingfei grinned. “I’d like a shot to help me sleep. Can you do that?”

“Sure, sure… I’ll prepare it. Just head back to your room; I’ll be there in a minute to give you the shot. But, I’ll have to put you in a straitjacket, hospital policy,” the nurse added.

“No problem.” Lu Mingfei nodded. “By the way, do you think I’m actually crazy? What’s your personal take?”

“When you first got here, you seemed fine.” The nurse stuck out her tongue. “But now… well, you’re starting to look a bit like one.”

“Good observation!” Lu Mingfei turned to walk toward his room. “You’ve got an eye for spotting crazies!”

“Spring of Gamma, Reload No. 108: Night, Storm, Highway, Action!”

Nono tossed her twin blades into the air and caught them mid-spin, twirling like a whirlwind into a mass of shadows. Lu Mingfei hoisted a rocket launcher, using his toe to kick open the ammo box and fired precisely into the shadowy figures. Shrapnel exploded in all directions, but none of it touched Nono. After so many retries, Lu Mingfei’s control over the blast radius had become near perfect.

“You went out for a late-night snack with that thing on you?” Nono started to ask, but before she could finish, Lu Mingfei grabbed her around the waist and tossed her into the Maybach.

The blue-faced Dou Erdun and the red-faced Daimyo closed in on Lu Mingfei from both sides. He swung the spent rocket launcher horizontally, aiming it at Daimyo’s face. The red-faced figure slashed upward with a katana, effortlessly cutting the rocket launcher in two. But Lu Mingfei used the momentum to shove one half of the launcher into Daimyo’s mouth, then drew his Desert Eagle from his waist and fired three rounds into the tube. Daimyo took the bullets straight to the head and collapsed, spasming as black blood poured from the pipe.

Dou Erdun’s tiger claws flashed, crossing in midair, but Lu Mingfei dodged aside. The claws extended on chains and wrapped around his legs. Just as Dou Erdun was about to pull him down, Lu Mingfei stepped forward, swinging a gleaming arc with his blade, slicing Dou Erdun’s chest open. The blade wasn’t his usual Tusk Yamato—it was Nono who had his weapon—but Lu Mingfei had picked up Daimyo’s katana.

Meanwhile, Greed Wolf Gilly and Hungry Wolf Kurich had transformed into massive lion-like beasts, flanking him from both sides. With the katana pointed to the ground, the enormous blade covered Lu Mingfei’s entire body as a shield. As Gilly charged, Lu Mingfei unleashed a diagonal slash, sparks flying as the blade clashed with the wolf’s sharp claws. Instantly, he pulled back, and the long handle of the sword collided with Kurich’s throat. The wolves’ teamwork was designed to trap him, but Lu Mingfei seemed to anticipate their every move.

Nono stood there, dumbfounded, watching him weave in and out of the wolves’ attacks, his swordplay almost like a dance. She had no idea that Lu Mingfei had studied swordsmanship so deeply—every swing was precise, like it had been calculated in advance. These wolves, tougher than Daimyo and Dou Erdun, were covered in tough black scales that even the katana struggled to cut through. Yet, their majestic manes had been shaved down to stubble by his strikes.

After a brief struggle, Lu Mingfei found his opening, driving the blade deep into Gilly’s side. The beast howled and staggered back, blood gushing from its abdomen. Kurich quickly moved to protect it.

Lu Mingfei, dragging the long sword, stepped back too. After putting some distance between them, he gave Kurich a thumbs up. “Good dog! Loyal!”

Lu Mingfei hopped into the Maybach, casually muttering “start” as he buckled his seatbelt. By now, the shadows had surrounded the vehicle.

Without rushing, Lu Mingfei shifted into reverse. The Maybach roared as it backed into the shadowy figures, smashing them against the guardrails. Then he shifted into drive, plowing into the figures ahead. He alternated between reverse and drive, the Maybach behaving like an enraged lion crashing through a pack of wolves, leaving black blood in its wake. He jerked the wheel, sending the car spinning, tires screeching. As the car straightened out, Lu Mingfei drew his Desert Eagle and fired three shots into the floor behind him.

A shadow, clinging to the underside of the car, spasmed and fell away, the Maybach’s tires rolling over its face. The creature’s skull didn’t shatter, but it was crushed deep into the ground. This was the one that had been slashing their tires.

Lu Mingfei glanced at his watch. Five minutes and thirteen seconds. This was their fastest escape yet, and his tactics and efficiency were nearly flawless.

“What’s gotten into you? Possessed by a ghost? Are you some kind of bulldozer? If you’re so skilled, why not fight Odin yourself?” Nono finally managed to say.

“Escape battles and siege battles are two different beasts. Also, haven’t you noticed? There’s a sort of barrier in front of Odin. Even spears can’t penetrate it.” Lu Mingfei answered coolly.

In reality, the 10th Highway was straight, but in the Nibelungen, it twisted like a ribbon. The Maybach sped along this ribbon, weaving through mountains as if flying through the clouds. Nono shivered, though whether it was from fear or excitement, she wasn’t sure. Lu Mingfei turned on her seat warmer and handed her a can of nuts from the glovebox. She quietly nibbled on them, like a squirrel soaked by the rain, while the dark mountains outside the window flew by, like giants running alongside them.

Lu Mingfei turned on the car’s stereo, and an ancient, melancholic Irish song played softly. A father and daughter sang together:

“The tree grows taller, the leaves turn green / Many times, I see my true love / So many times, I see him all alone / He is still young, but he grows older by the day…”

The windpipes, harp, and voices intertwined, like four threads from the same string.

It was a sad song, yet there was no sorrow in the voices—just a father and daughter standing on Ireland’s verdant, shaded earth, calmly speaking, while the wind blew through the tall grass at their feet.

The Maybach signaled to the right, and its headlights illuminated a yellow sign on the side of the road: “IDA: Heavy Industrial Development Zone.”

A curving exit ramp appeared on the right side of the highway, leading off into the darkness.

“We’re making a quick stop. It’ll only take fifteen minutes,” Lu Mingfei said. “There’s an elder I know who lives nearby.”

“What elder would live in the Nibelungen? Are we stopping by for tea?” Nono asked, her eyes skeptical.

“Trust me, I won’t do anything reckless. I’m familiar with places like the Nibelungen. He doesn’t live here, but we can get some heavy weaponry from his place.”

“You certainly don’t look like it’s your first time here,” Nono remarked, turning her gaze back to the window.

The Maybach came to a stop in front of a barbed wire fence. Behind it was a newly constructed industrial park, with a freshly paved road leading directly from the highway. However, the roadside was overgrown with weeds taller than a person.

The orderly factory buildings stood silent, with the sound of raindrops tapping on the tin roofs. In the center of the industrial park was a small white building.

Lu Mingfei handed all the weapons over to Nono. “I’ll go in alone. You wait here for a bit, senior sister.”

He trudged through the muddy ground, making his way toward the white building with uneven steps.

Nono looked around. It was eerily quiet, save for the sound of rain hitting the rooftops and leaves. The shadows hadn’t caught up yet.

It was summer, yet there were no frogs or crickets. The whole world seemed to be in a deep slumber.

She noticed the name of the industrial park on the acrylic sign by the roadside: Huan Ya Group.

Lu Mingfei kicked open the door and walked through the wind-swept hallway, heading to the office at the end.

He forced the lock open and rummaged through the unlocked drawers until he found a key rack hanging with countless keys. He descended a stairwell cluttered with debris, reaching the second basement floor, where he found the iron door.

This was the destination of his trip. Games often had hidden spaces like this, containing either secret merchants or mysterious items.

When Chu Zihang was fifteen, the Huan Ya Group had not yet gone bankrupt, and the basement hadn’t been flooded. Back then, Chu Tianjiao still lived here.
