Dragon Raja

“Chu Zihang is a good student, just like Lu Mingfei is a good student. As for the White Emperor lineage, I’ve heard nothing about it.” Schneider stared at the two of them, his iron-gray eyes filled with a cold light.

“Wha… what White Emperor lineage?” Guderian’s tongue seemed to get tied.

There had always been a shadow in his heart. He hadn’t seen Lu Mingfei’s 3E exam papers—Norma had evaluated them and directly reported the results to the principal, who then personally announced Lu Mingfei’s successful completion of the 3E. This effectively acknowledged his bloodline. But it couldn’t explain why Lu Mingfei was unaffected by the “Yanling: Emperor.” During the exam, he resonated with various high-level Yanling abilities, yet he remained unresponsive to the “Emperor,” the symbol of the Black Emperor’s lineage.

He did not submit to the “Emperor.”

Among the dragons recorded in history, the only ones who did not submit to the “Emperor” were those of the White Emperor’s lineage.

But Guderian didn’t say it out loud, and Manstein didn’t bring it up again. They were the two most deeply involved in the study of dragon genealogy at Cassell College. If they both “happened” to overlook this detail together, no one else should have paid attention. Schneider shouldn’t have paid attention either—on that night, Schneider seemed to accept Manstein’s explanation. Knowing Schneider’s personality, if he had any doubts, he would have brought them up instead of keeping them hidden. Guderian gradually let go of his concerns.

“Manstein, you’re not very good at lying. Your reasoning was solid, but your shifting gaze gave you away. Guderian has the habit of scratching his head when he lies, and your habit is looking to the lower right. You two really are from the same mental hospital; even your bad habits are similar. “After you left the library, I immediately returned and retrieved the surveillance video from the archive room. I watched the entire argument between two of you and then destroyed the video.”

Manstein silently sat at the edge of the table, turning to look at his old friend Guderian. “As the Head of the Disciplinary Committee, this kind of violation of college rules wouldn’t be forgiven by the School Board, would it?”

“I can forgive it,” Professor Schneider said. “The three of us can have an understanding.”

“You mean?” Professor Guderian’s eyes lit up.

“Your good student Lu Mingfei and my good student Chu Zihang are both excellent, diligent, and normal. They should receive the best education this campus can provide, not be isolated as anomalies. They will become heroes of Cassell College, and even humanity,” Professor Schneider said slowly. “Isn’t that right?”

Professors Guderian and Manstein looked at each other, not responding immediately.

“Yes! No doubt, that’s correct!” Professor Guderian suddenly understood and stood up, saying loudly.

“Good, that way we are all great mentors.” A rare smile appeared on Professor Schneider’s scarred face. “The head of the Disciplinary Committee agrees with our view as well, right?”

“Hey! What does it matter to me if you’re all great mentors? Lu Mingfei is Guderian’s student, Chu Zihang is yours—this matter originally had nothing to do with me, right?” Manstein protested. “Yet somehow, I’ve been dragged into this and have to lie with you? That puts me at a disadvantage, doesn’t it?”

“Not entirely. You now have a new student. To my knowledge, her Yanling record is also quite unusual, but it’s been suppressed by the principal without deeper investigation,” Schneider patted Manstein’s shoulder.

“Who? What new student?” Manstein was taken aback. He was one of the few professors without students, just filling in for classes. With his duties as Head of the Disciplinary Committee, he was already very busy.

“Chen Motong,” Schneider slowly said the name. “Her previous mentor, Mance, assigned you as her new mentor. Want to know her Yanling record?”

“Why would Mance assign me?” Manstein was stunned.

“Two reasons. First, she works part-time on campus with Professor Guderian, and since you are friends with Guderian, you’re bound to look after her. Secondly, one of the responsibilities of the Disciplinary Committee is monitoring Yanling abilities, and you have the privilege to view Yanling records. If you are her mentor… though you are greedy and sharp-tongued, you have no fixed stance…”

“Greedy, sharp-tongued, and no stance… what are you trying to say?” Manstein was exasperated.

“You tend to protect those around you—that’s your habit. According to the records, Chen Motong… has no Yanling,” Schneider said slowly. “An A-Rank student, yet Mance says she has no Yanling—when even someone like Finger, an F-Rank, has one. Moreover, Mance stopped any investigation into her. There can only be one reason for that: her Yanling is special—so special that Mance couldn’t write it down. Mance really liked this student, as you both know.”

“Damn it… I’m already very busy. Why assign her to me? And why should I protect this student? I could simply write a truthful report to the principal,” Manstein said.

Schneider took a deep breath and said softly, “You wouldn’t be bad to Chen Motong; think of it as fulfilling her mother’s request to you.”

Manstein was silent for a long time without speaking.

4. Elopement

“You don’t have a Yanling skill?” Lu Mingfei was curious.

He and Nono were on their way back to campus. Nono was driving, and the car stereo played a woman cheerfully singing “Douya Douya Dou Dizhu.” Nono’s music library contained all kinds of strange songs—rap, Nordic mystical themes, hymns, and even this popular “Douya Douya Dou Dizhu.” After watching the fireworks, both of them were in high spirits.

Nono described her way of collecting music as being like a scavenger—carrying a basket on her back while walking down the street, picking up anything good she found along the way, never organizing or categorizing. When she had time, she would dump the basket out and sift through the treasures she had gathered—there was no rhyme or reason to it. Lu Mingfei admired Nono’s collecting style, considering that he himself had always longed for a carefree lifestyle, akin to scavenging without responsibility.
