The Lionheart Society elites were veterans of the college, and once they received their diplomas, the door to the Execution Bureau would be open to them.
Behind a carved screen was the confessional of the Cassell College chapel, where Chu Zihang had stayed.
At Cassell College, the required religious course is “Norse Theology and History” instead of “Christian History”. Professors believe that myths from all over the world allude to the ancient dragon rule in some way, but the proportion of real history in Norse mythology is higher. However, given that Christianity has gained almost universal belief in the United States, and even the currency is printed with “We believe in God”, this historic chapel has been preserved.
Although there have been debates in the school board meetings over the years about whether it is necessary for a church to exist in a place like Cassell College, we only need to let all students take Nordic theology as their spiritual program.
“But… there must be a place for girls to wear white wedding dresses and say ‘I do’ in front of the priest, right?” Principal ended the discussion.
The entire academy has only one trainee pastor, Masashi Toyama, who never holds Sunday worship services or accepts confessions, and only accepts wedding appointments. The exquisite confessional has been empty for many years. Obviously, even if Chu Zihang is ready to believe in Christianity now, no pastor will accept his confession. The fully armed Pastor Masashi Toyama is now on guard on the first line of the road outside Norton Hall.
A dark figure leaped down from the second floor—Susie, the sniper, approached the confessional. She was twenty-one years old, a third-year student, Grade A, majoring in dragon genetics. She was an important member of the Lionheart Society, vice president, and also Nono’s roommate—quite famous. People often compared Chu Zihang and Caesar, and alongside them, they compared Nono and Susie. The two girls maintained peace in their daily lives but stood in extreme opposition in terms of their group allegiances.
“Are you okay?” She knocked on the door of the confessional.
“I’m fine. Caesar’s side is about to start; it should be soon here as well.” Chu Zihang replied from inside.
“Your body…”
“I’m fine, there’s no problem,” Chu Zihang interrupted her.
Susie sighed. She knew that Chu Zihang was not happy to discuss this topic.
“C Group, please evacuate the chapel area. C Group, please evacuate the chapel area and strengthen the security of the library,” Professor Schneider’s voice came through the C Group’s public channel.
“Understood!” everyone replied in unison.
They were already used to following orders. Compared to the Student Union, the Lionheart Society was closer to the Execution Bureau. The members of the Lionheart Society could be considered the reserve forces of the Bureau.
“Zihang! Evacuate,” Susie knocked on the door of the confessional again.
She was a bit confused by this command. The chapel was the core hub leading to both the Three Goddesses’ level and the belfry where the Night Watcher was located; it should have had a concentrated guard.
“No, not me,” Chu Zihang said quietly.
“Not you?” Susie was stunned. “The order was given to everyone through the public channel.”
“C Group, please immediately evacuate the chapel area, except for Chu Zihang,” Professor Schneider’s voice rang out again. Chu Zihang seemed to have expected this order.
“This command is only for those not participating in the chapel battle,” Chu Zihang said. “Susie, evacuate.”
Chu Zihang reached out from behind the curtain and tightly grasped Susie’s wrist. His hand was pale, slender, warm, and strong.
“Don’t worry. If nothing goes wrong, we can have supper together in two hours,” Chu Zihang said.
“Is that a promise?” Susie put her hand over Chu Zihang’s.
“Yes.”
Susie hurriedly caught up with the evacuees, and when she ran to the church door she couldn’t help looking back. In the silent church hall, the small confessional looked mysterious and lonely.
“Block the church gate.” Professor Schneider’s order came again.
Professor Schneider’s order was to lock Chu Zihang alone in the church.
3. Good Student
Professor Schneider stared at the large screen, watching the light representing C Group evacuate the chapel, and sighed heavily.
“Leaving Chu Zihang there alone?” Professor Guderian was surprised by this command. “That’s too much responsibility for a third-year student!”
“Who is Chu Zihang’s mentor?” Professor Schneider asked.
“You are.”
“Yes, I am Chu Zihang’s mentor,” Professor Schneider nodded. “So I know my student’s capabilities. ‘Edict’ has been lifted, and the students’ Yanling “Word Spirit” abilities have been unlocked. They are now like wild horses on a prairie—full of endless possibilities.”
“Chu Zihang’s Yanling… what is it?” Guderian seemed to realize something.
Schneider paused for a moment, his tone becoming extremely stern. “Yanling “Word Spirit” records can only be accessed by the student’s mentor and the principal. You have no right to inquire about this matter!”
“Is Chu Zihang’s Yanling… very dangerous?” Manstein stood behind Schneider, placing his hand on Schneider’s shoulder, his gaze sharp. “You had the rest of C Group evacuate the area because you didn’t want anyone to know about Chu Zihang’s Yanling. Those people are all from the Lionheart Society—they wouldn’t easily divulge secrets, yet you still don’t want them to know about Chu Zihang’s Yanling… because it’s dangerous, isn’t it?”
“I repeat, you have no right to ask!” Professor Schneider said expressionlessly.
“You never reported this to the Disciplinary Committee! Don’t talk nonsense; ordinary professors don’t have access to Yanling records, but I can apply for privileged access in the name of the Disciplinary Committee! Have you forgotten the college rules? Damn it!” Manstein shouted. “Schneider! You are in charge of the Execution Bureau—you should know what kind of students we have! They carry the dual bloodlines of humanity and dragons. Issuing commands within a domain alters natural laws. The dangers of these abilities have been proven by countless cases. Do you still remember why that student, whom we referred to as ‘Devourer Suicide,’ died?”
“I reported this to the principal, and he tacitly allowed me to keep it confidential,” Professor Schneider said in a low voice. “Manstein, even if you want to help me, forget about this matter. Chu Zihang’s Yanling is still under my control.”
“Damn it! This isn’t about whether you can control it or not—all dangerous Yanling abilities must be registered and archived according to college regulations. Simply telling the principal isn’t enough; the principal doesn’t have the authority to allow you to keep it a secret either! If I stay silent about this, when the School Board finds out, it will be you, me, the principal, and Guderian all violating the regulations!” Manstein was furious. “Something that can be controlled now—how can you guarantee it won’t go out of control in the future? How can you not prepare a contingency plan?”
Schneider was silent for a long time, taking a deep breath. “Chu Zihang… is a good student.”
“This has nothing to do with whether he’s a good student or not!”
“Once a Yanling ability is deemed risky, that student will be isolated from all others, right?” Professor Schneider looked into Professor Manstein’s eyes.
“Yes.”
“I believe Chu Zihang is a good student, working hard to adapt to his abilities and become one of us. We’ve all felt the loneliness brought by the ‘Sorrow of Blood.’ He came to Cassell College to overcome this loneliness, and I can’t think of any reason to stop myself from helping him,” Schneider said quietly. “I was isolated because of a dangerous Yanling ability. I know that pain. You’ve felt it too, in the children’s mental hospital, haven’t you?”
The room went quiet. Manstein and Guderian exchanged glances but said nothing.
