Dragon Raja; Chapter 39: The Dictator

Dragon Raja

Late at night, Norton Hall, conference room.

All members of the Student Union attended the meeting, with the current president, Caesar, sitting on the sofa in front of the fireplace, hands supporting his chin, looking forward. Above his head hung the Gattuso family’s phoenix crest. Silence had persisted for a long time, and almost everyone kept their heads down.

“For the first time in three years, we will lose the usage rights to Norton Hall, so this is our last meeting here,” Caesar said indifferently. “For me, this is unprecedented—a complete defeat.”

The atmosphere was heavy with dejection. Since Caesar took control of the Student Union, they had always won “Day of Liberty.” Under Caesar’s leadership, the Student Union had finally become a society that could rival Cassell College’s most traditional fraternity, the Lionheart Society. Even with Chu Zihang, an “over-A”-rank member, they hadn’t lost Norton Hall. Now, unbelievably, they had lost to a freshman.

“We didn’t lose; it was a shameful black-gun battle!” said a senior member. “We shouldn’t give up Norton Hall!”

The room erupted with emotion; the members whispered to each other—it had indeed been a very unjust loss.

“Stop!” Caesar raised his hand, his voice commanding, silencing the commotion in the room.

“I refuse to speak to cowards. Cowards are the ones who refuse to acknowledge their own defeat.” Caesar’s icy blue eyes were emotionless. “Today, I don’t want to discuss the reason for our failure. Lu Mingfei, an S-Rank freshman from China, shot Chu Zihang and me twice and won this year’s Day of Liberty as a third party. We must respect the game rules. According to the game rules, we lost. The Lionheart Society remained silent, which means Chu Zihang accepted the result. Are you all inferior to Chu Zihang?”

“I have already rented the adjacent Amber Hall as the Student Union’s venue for next year. Move our belongings out—this place belongs to Lu Mingfei starting at midnight.” Caesar stood up and poured himself a glass of cognac. “Lu Mingfei is probably preparing for tomorrow’s 3E exam right now. Do you think he will pass?”

“Caesar, do you mean…?”

“A moment ago, the campus news network broke a story—S-Rank freshman Lu Mingfei had no resonance with ‘Yanling:”World Spirit” Emperor.’” Caesar said softly.

After a brief moment of silence, excitement flashed across the eyes of every member.

“The result of the 3E exam will tell us the extent of Lu Mingfei’s potential. If he fails, he will be demoted. Without resonance for Yanling, how can he pass the 3E exam?” Caesar looked around at everyone. “I’m looking forward to it, and I think Chu Zihang is too. Nono, what do you think of Lu Mingfei?”

“That loser? He might drop straight down to ‘Z’ if there were such a rank,” Nono leaned against the wall, speaking nonchalantly.

All the members smiled at each other. The 3E exam was the first hurdle, making all freshmen uneasy. Lu Mingfei’s success wouldn’t come easily; if he failed, his rank would plummet—BCDEF—and he would become a laughingstock in the entire college. A lamb that sneaked into a pride of lions wearing a lion’s skin, only to be exposed, would face a fate too dreadful to imagine.

Caesar, however, did not smile. He lowered his head and gently touched his chest—the spot where Lu Mingfei’s bullet had hit.

“The exam’s abbreviation is EEE, spelled as Extraction Evaluation Exam, meaning bloodline assessment exam. It is mainly used to identify students’ dragon bloodline. Dragon-blood hybrids will have resonance with the ‘dragon language,’ which will cause a ‘Vision’ effect, meaning they will naturally see dragon text appear in their minds,” Finger explained to Lu Mingfei. “This ability is extremely important for dragon-blood hybrids. Dragon-blood hybrids possess supernatural abilities called Yanling ‘World Spirit’. In their domain, words spoken in the dragon language become a rule. Thus, ‘language’ is the tool for dragons to wield power. Students who are insensitive to the dragon language usually lack ability. Those who fail the 3E exam will be demoted, and those who do poorly might be expelled.”

“I was abducted here, wasn’t I? Now they want to expel me?” Lu Mingfei said.

“Then you’ll get a memory wipe and be kicked out. You signed a confidentiality agreement when you enrolled, and if you go home now, you’ll probably have to retake a year and prepare for college again.”

“That’s an unfair clause! They wrote it in Latin—who could read that?”

Professor Guderian couldn’t hear this complaint anymore. The old man, frustrated over Lu Mingfei’s inability to resonate with the dragon language, claimed to have encountered an academic difficulty and had gone to the library to search for information.

The dorm quieted down, the window open. Lu Mingfei sat on his bed, staring out at the beautiful full moon. Moonlight reflected off the red-tiled spire of the chapel, and the cool night breeze blew across him. It was indeed a beautiful place, but tomorrow, he would be shown the door.

“Memory wipes can be quite fun,” Finger’s head dangled from the top bunk like a ghost.

“Never tried it before. Looks like I’ll get to soon—can’t wait,” Lu Mingfei responded, perfectly calm.

He guessed Finger wanted to scare him, and the best counter was to put on a poker face. Like when Lu Mingze suddenly boasted over dinner, “I saw Chen Wenwen shopping at the bookstore today with a handsome guy from Class 2, and she was laughing so happily.” Lu Mingfei would wear a blank face and say, “What? Brother, are you talking to me?” Lu Mingze would be unable to break through his thick skin, leaving dejectedly to clean up the dishes.

“Doesn’t China have a philosopher who said people are unhappy because they remember too much?”

“It wasn’t a philosopher—it was Ouyang Feng in Ashes of Time. Fine, let them wipe me. I’m definitely failing tomorrow, better to wash myself clean and retake a year, unemployed if I can’t get into college…” Lu Mingfei inexplicably sighed.

“You sighed just now,” Finger pointed out.

“I was just yawning.”

“You don’t want to go back to China,” Finger suddenly said.

Lu Mingfei froze, not understanding what Finger meant.
