Dragon Raja

“It doesn’t matter. You’ve already received your Student Union card, haven’t you? You’re officially a member of the Student Union.” Caesar said, “Besides, the principal asked me to tell everyone that if you complete this mission, you’ll receive full marks in all subjects this semester, meaning your GPA for the first term will be 4.0.”

Everyone applauded, except Lu Mingfei, who looked like he was facing a catastrophe.

“But I didn’t come here for a 4.0 GPA!” he muttered.

“Then why are you here, Lu Mingfei?” Caesar turned, his ice-blue eyes exuding an intimidating aura.

Lu Mingfei was stunned.

“You found out that all the students here have dragon lineage, yet the goal is to slay dragons. Everyone who comes here is risking their lives. If you want to leave, just file for withdrawal. The Execution Bureau has ways to erase your memory, and once you return to China, they will fabricate a story about your time in America. You could go back to the way things were.” Caesar stared into Lu Mingfei’s eyes. “Someone must have told you this, right?”

“They did.” Lu Mingfei scratched his ear.

“Then why didn’t you choose to leave?” Caesar asked.

The entire room fell silent. No one spoke, and you could hear everyone breathing. Caesar’s question wasn’t only directed at Lu Mingfei; it was for everyone.

At this moment, Caesar looked more like a leader than ever.

“There’s always… a personal reason.” After a long silence, Lu Mingfei mumbled.

He looked at the black card in his hand. There were only two lines on it: the first line, embossed in silver, read “Student Union,” and the second, in smaller print, read “Ricardo M. Lu.”

His Student Union membership card: Ricardo M. Lu, Student Union Club Organization Department member.

“I really don’t know how I ended up here.” He said to himself.

A cold laugh came from behind, startling Lu Mingfei. He recognized it—it was Lu Mingze’s laugh. He quickly turned around, trying to spot the mysterious young man in the crowd.

He couldn’t find him. Instead, he saw Nono hiding behind a tall Student Union officer, trying to style Zero’s hair…

“What are you doing?” Caesar followed Lu Mingfei’s gaze and noticed Nono.

“Oh.” Nono released Zero’s hair, shrugging nonchalantly.

“In any case, you now know everything. You can still choose to leave. If you give up, the procedure is easy. I’d be glad if you did because I only work with the best. Whether you’re an S-Rank or not, if you’re a cowardly fool, I don’t want to see you.” Caesar said.

“You’re being a little hard on him, aren’t you?” Nono stepped in.

“You’re saying all this stuff about protecting humanity, but not everyone in this world is elite. How can you protect the world if you look down on it? Most people in the world are ‘cowardly fools’ like him.”

The Student Union members looked at each other, Nono’s words were obviously a rebuttal to Caesar’s, but at the same time she agreed that Lu Mingfei was a fool.

Caesar hesitated for a moment, as if he wanted to defend himself, but he refrained from doing so. Perhaps he didn’t want to make Nono unhappy, or maybe she actually hit his soft spot. He didn’t say anything and just shrugged.

She turned towards Lu Mingfei and patted his shoulder. “Decide for yourself what you’ll do. As long as you’re with me, I’ll protect you.”

Everyone looked at Lu Mingfei, wanting for him to return the card and leave the meeting room, but he simply put it back in his pocket. “I didn’t say I won’t go, I just want to make it clear in advance: Don’t blame me if I slow you down.” Lu Mingfei also folded his arms, in the same posture as Caesar.

One could clearly feel the aura of this new student colliding with Caesar’s across the long table, then Lu Mingfei turned his head nonchalantly to look out the window.

Two months later…

Lu Mingfei looked at his reflection in the mirror. He still didn’t understand what material this damn tight combat suit was made of. It clung to him like a second layer of tough skin, reminding him of those slimming body-shaping underwear he often saw in TV ads.

“You’ve been staring at yourself for fifteen minutes.” Finger stuck his head out from the top bunk.

Lu Mingfei sighed, “I’m just thinking if I look more like the thief Jiu Yue from Stealing Stars by Daylight or like Rei Ayanami from Evangelion.”

“Hey, most people who get an Execution Bureau combat suit are ecstatic. They spin around in front of the mirror, admiring the badges, epaulets, and practicing some cool gun-drawing moves. But you’re here fantasizing about having a figure like an anime girl’s?” Finger said. “Wake up, wake up. Is your life really just about fantasizing over anime characters?”

“And games, too.”

“Still a shut-in…” Finger shook his head.

“Hey, useless senior, you’ve repeated a grade for four years now, so why are you still at Cassell College?” Lu Mingfei sat by the bed, looking out of the open window at the starry sky.

“As a useless senior, I’ve always been dedicated to researching dragon genes and lineage. Besides that, I’m good for nothing… Do you think I could make a living outside?” Finger rummaged through his messy bedding, pulling out a piece of waffle and stuffing it in his mouth.

“But i might end up dead, you know?” Lu Mingfei hung his head.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got it figured out. I’ll support you remotely!” Finger reached down and patted his head.

“Remote support?”

“I’ll always be online. Just bring something to connect to the network. With your skills and my wisdom, what can’t we solve?”
