At that moment, a powerful thunderclap shook the glass window, casting a flash of white over it. The lightning bolt split the sky, illuminating the entire Runda Building. The immense static voltage made every lit window flicker as the rain finally came pouring down.
Tang Wei suddenly shivered. A terrible sense of foreboding filled him, as if this email had come from his recent client, that “tough guy” dressed as Ronald McDonald. And perhaps “Byebye” wasn’t a farewell wish for his picturesque boating adventures in Vietnam.
The word could also mean a final goodbye.
18:40. The black BMW moved smoothly along the quiet tree-lined road. Rain fell in torrents, and Lu Mingfei gazed out of the car window. At the end of the road, Lake Garden One loomed — a red-brick old house obscured by the rainy mist.
This house was known as “Lake Garden No. 1” because it was the only building along the entire Lake Garden Road bearing such a nameplate. The heavy wrought iron gate was wide open, and the car drove straight in, pulling up to the entrance.
The whole house was dark. The huge floor-to-ceiling windows revealed empty tables covered in checkered tablecloths. The front door was closed, with only one light on above it. A waiter in white stood in the rain holding an umbrella.
“Are you kidding me? Is this place even open?” Lu Mingfei grumbled under his breath, just as the driver opened his door for him.
“Aspasia is reserved for the evening, sir,” said the white-clad waiter courteously.
“What the…?” With a sense of relief, Lu Mingfei tried to make his exit. The waiter, however, slowly opened the door, saying, “Mr. Ricardo M. Lu, tonight you are our only guest.”
A buzzing sound rang in Lu Mingfei’s mind as he realized that the influence of his club bosses was even greater than he imagined — they’d booked the entire Aspasia just for him!
Soft music started playing, and the waiter walked to the center of the dim room, lighting the floating candle on the table. In the warm candlelight sat Chen Wenwen, dressed all in white, with a black head of hair adorned by a white butterfly clip.
Time seemed to rewind at that moment, pulling Lu Mingfei back to four years ago — the afternoon when they first met.
18:45. Outside the Runda Building, under the downpour, people shielded themselves with whatever they could find and ran in all directions, leaving the street suddenly empty. Chu Zihang stood in the storm, holding a long box labeled “Fresh Flowers Delivery.” He looked down, watching large raindrops burst apart as they struck the ground, like transparent flowers.
A truck marked “FedEx” tore through the rain, screeching to a halt before Chu Zihang. The elite support team, dispatched by the college’s headquarters, jumped out of the vehicle one by one with uniform precision, clearly well-trained.
“Quite low profile, as expected. Very refreshing.” Chu Zihang commented drily.
The burly workers stood side by side as if awaiting inspection, though their outfits were… eccentric. Some wore “Adi-King” branded tracksuits, others wore wide-legged Korean-style pants, while some had oversized “Double-Star” sneakers on. The leader wore a full green Beijing Guoan football team uniform, appearing to be a diehard fan.
“Not fitting?” The leader looked down at his attire, confused. “I saw people in China dressing like this.”
“Except our chest muscles look like they’re about to explode through the fabric,” Chu Zihang observed the men, each built like a bodybuilder.
“Not much we can do unless we shove the muscles in our pockets…” the leader muttered.
“Save the small talk.” Chu Zihang said, “You should have all read the mission plan by now. You have five minutes to prepare. Orders will be transmitted directly from Professor Schneider through your earpieces.” With a wave of his hand, Chu Zihang turned, carrying the box as he walked towards the building. He smiled at the guard by the door, “Good day. Fresh flowers delivery service.”
18:50. Chu Zihang was in the high-speed elevator heading directly to the top floor, with the floor numbers changing rapidly.
18:52. Across the candlelight, Lu Mingfei gazed into Chen Wenwen’s eyes while the waiter poured them rose-hued aperitif.
18:53. Tang Wei hurriedly packed up in his office. He didn’t want to wait any longer — his underlings could handle the delivery. On such a rainy day, all he wanted was to get home early.
18:54. Security personnel on every floor of Runda Building received orders to strengthen security amid the rain, turning on all monitoring systems.
Manstein looked down at his calibrated watch, wearing his headset, with the lines to China all open. The second hand ticked.
Beijing time, 18:55.
“Operation commence,” Manstein spoke, activating the stopwatch function on his wristwatch.
He knew that this command would start a precise machine: a machine composed of the nine-member team inside the Runda Building. Each was a cog in the mechanism, with a specific role, working in concert. Every member’s mission plan was unique, and if they followed it properly, five minutes later, they would have their target.
The man in the “Adi-King” outfit strode through the rain towards the building entrance. The “local” outfit did little to mask the aggression of his imposing physique. Security guards stepped back, placing their hands on their batons — no matter where they went, these hulking men always looked like trouble.
“Adi-King” spread his arms wide, blocking the guards’ strikes with his forearms, and grabbed two by the collars, hoisting them into the air. Alarms blared, startling the entire ground floor. Shoppers, caught in the rain and crowding the bottom level, looked towards the entrance. “Adi-King” was already entangled with more than a dozen guards, sprinting between the high-end shops on the first floor. No obstacle posed a challenge to him. A 1.5-meter display? He leaped over it like a hurdler. The guards, stunned, could only weave through the crowd. Whenever “Adi-King” found himself too far ahead, he would stop, look back, and smile stupidly at them.
The shoppers were confused. Was this a crazy fitness trainer? Or maybe a parkour performance for entertainment? Either way, the sight of these men running after each other seemed amusing.
However, they soon realized something was off. Guards were pouring from all directions, running down the escalators. A brute wearing “Double-Star” shoes and a tracksuit was charging up the downwards-moving escalator, taking large strides, each step crossing several levels, like a missile colliding into the guards and pinning them to the center of the escalator. The escalator moved downward, but the men remained still.
