Before long, it even started to get a little hot.
Lu Mingfei started to get worried. The plastic bag’s air was almost depleted, and the pool had become uncomfortably hot. He thought maybe the dragon had wandered off, and it would be okay to take a look. He tried to reach out to pat Finger and Lao Tang but found nothing. He swept his hands left and right, but they touched no one.
Panic gripped him. He cautiously surfaced, looking around to see only white steam. The pool temperature had risen to about forty degrees, and if it got any hotter, it would really become a hot spring. There was no sign of Finger or Lao Tang—maybe they couldn’t stand the heat and got out.
“Surely Lao Tang and Finger… didn’t get eaten?” he thought. They did seem like they would be tastier than him, but there was no reason for the dragon to completely ignore him.
He climbed out along the ladder, and by then the water was even hotter, steaming like boiling soup. The swimming hall had become a giant sauna, with no clear view of the exits.
Lu Mingfei dared not make a sound when he saw a figure swimming to the pool’s edge and climbing out.
“Who can handle such heat?” Lu Mingfei relaxed a bit and ran in small steps toward the poolside, carrying his soaked underwear.
He froze—what he saw through the white steam wasn’t Finger’s or Lao Tang’s face, but the face of a delicate young boy climbing up the ladder. He seemed even younger than Lu Mingfei, about sixteen or seventeen, with a small face, light eyebrows, and a pair of pure black eyes that looked empty. His naked body was a pale grayish-white, and his ribs stuck out from how thin he was.
He stared blankly at Lu Mingfei for a few seconds.
“I’m not looking for you. I’m looking for my brother. Have you seen him?” the boy asked, his voice distant and ethereal.
“No.” Lu Mingfei shook his head, wondering who his brother was.
“Then I’ll go look for him. Goodbye.” The boy brushed past Lu Mingfei, his body radiating heat that hit Lu Mingfei’s face.
Lu Mingfei turned to watch the boy slowly disappear into the white steam.
“Brother… Brother…” The boy called out, his voice growing more distant.
This voice sounded familiar… Lu Mingfei suddenly felt goosebumps rise all over his body. He remembered where he’d heard this voice—it was exactly the same as the dragon’s cry, except that in the hallway, the echoes made it sound more eerie, like a ghost’s wail.
Could it be that he had just talked to a dragon?
He dared not think any further; the overwhelming fear was almost swallowing him. He grabbed his clothes from the side of the pool, putting them on as he ran out. There was no more white steam in the corridor, and he sprinted all the way to the emergency exit at the back door. He pushed open the door and took a deep breath of fresh air, finally feeling a bit safer.
But once again, he froze. An old man stood before him, hands in his pants pockets, with neatly combed white hair, wearing a black suit, and a bright red rose tucked into his jacket pocket.
Judging by his face, he must be very old, yet his posture was that of an undeniably young man.
“Lu Mingfei, I’ve been looking for you,” the old man smiled.
“Anjou… Principal!” Lu Mingfei’s eyes widened.
Lu Mingfei followed the principal upstairs. They climbed the iron stairs on the side of the church, ascending the ruins of this almost-collapsed building.
Outside the clock tower attic was a wide-open balcony. Inside, the attic was messy, with an old cowboy sitting on the sofa, drinking beer. It was hard to believe this guy could be so calm when two maniacs had been using “King’s Blaze” to clash below.
“Hey! Anjou, is this our new S-Rank?” The old cowboy waved at Lu Mingfei. “Hello, young man.”
Lu Mingfei stiffly returned the greeting.
The principal pulled Lu Mingfei to the balcony, opened a suitcase in front of him, and assembled a large-caliber sniper rifle, handing it to Lu Mingfei. Lu Mingfei silently took it—no one spoke during the entire process. The principal then took out a cylindrical quartz glass sealed container and showed Lu Mingfei what was inside. It was a slender bullet, with a dark red bullet head, like a roughly polished ruby, with a blood-like sheen that seemed to flow and change.
“The Fifth Element, the Philosopher’s Stone,” the principal said. “An alchemical bullet, with a bullet head made of pure spiritual matter. It’s the only thing that can kill the Dragon King. Be careful with it—it’s very rare.”
He loaded the bullet into the chamber with a “click,” then patted Lu Mingfei on the shoulder.
“Principal… what does this mean?” Lu Mingfei finally managed to speak his first words.
The principal pointed to the campus, where different squads were converging toward Valhalla. Above Valhalla, on top of the rooster, stood a shining figure—the dragon—issuing hoarse shouts to the entire campus. The running students were shooting Frigg rounds at him, and the blood-red mist completely enveloped him. He waved his arms to shield his face and kept shouting.
“Brother!”
He really seemed like a vengeful spirit, sending chills down the spine.
“That’s the Dragon King. I’ll break his defenses for you. Soon, you’ll see a turning eye, his third dragon eye—that’s his weak spot. Aim for his forehead and shoot him with this bullet,” the principal said. “Can you do it?”
Lu Mingfei looked at the sniper rifle in his hand. It was a top-notch weapon, with an infrared laser sight. For someone with some shooting experience, hitting the target wasn’t rare—missing would be strange. And the distance wasn’t even that far.
“But why me?” He was confused.
“Because you were chosen. Trust in your lineage—you are a unique S-Rank! Only you can be immune to my Yanling. The principal pulled a folding knife from the inner pocket of his suit. It was a large, old-fashioned folding knife with an intricately embedded copper and wood handle. The slightly curved blade had twisted patterns—a rare Damascus steel knife. In ancient times, these precious meteorite irons were used only to forge the swords of heroes.
