Dragon Raja 5

Dr. Duden shrugged. “Similar stories are everywhere in mythology.”

“I understand, I can cooperate,” Lu Mingfei turned to Lu Lincheng, “Now it’s my turn to state my terms, isn’t it?”

“It’s best not to be too demanding. We’re not omnipotent devils and can’t promise you everything,” Lu Lincheng said coldly.

“Is my first condition, that I want to see my mother with my own eyes, too demanding?” Lu Mingfei asked softly, staring into his eyes.

On the monitor, the boy sat on the edge of the bed, peeling an orange and patiently removing the outer membrane from each segment before feeding it to the middle-aged woman. The woman reclined on a pile of pillows, watching the boy with a kind expression. When he brought the orange to her lips, she smiled and ate it obediently like a child. Sometimes, orange juice would spill from the corner of her mouth, and the boy would silently wipe it away.

The reunion between Giovanni and Lu Mingfei was so quiet, like a silent film. Lu Lincheng ordered all medical staff to leave the ward, leaving only a surveillance camera silently watching the mother and son.

Of course, there was dozens of eyes watching from behind the camera.

All morning, Dr. Duden and his team watched this live-action family drama. Initially, they were completely encrossed, their eyes glued to the screen, wanting to analyze every frame. They were utterly unsure what Lu Mingfei was thinking; perhaps the most ruthless demon in the world lurked within him. No one could even be sure if he was Lu Mingfei or that devil at that moment, so they had to be extremely vigilant. The middle-aged woman was no ordinary person either; she was shrewd, cunning, and ruthless. Yet Lu Mingfei was constantly engaged in these mundane tasks, essentially acting as a child caring for his parents with Alzheimer’s. There was hardly any dialogue between them; their only emotional exchange was gazing at each other, during which they would silently smile. The more they watched, the more exhausted they became. Even Dr. Duden left the monitor, pacing around the room with a glass of wine in his hand.

“It’s over!” someone shouted.

On the screen, Lu Mingfei covered Giovanni with a blanket, whispered a few words in her ear, and wheeled himself away from the area covered by the cameras. A group of people rushed out, running across most of the corridor before stopping abruptly. After catching their breath, they turned the corner and saw Lu Mingfei sitting upright in his wheelchair, looking out through the metal blinds. somewhat holy air. Lu Lincheng stood behind him, supporting the wheelchair.

Lu Lincheng sat outside the ward smoking, and the corridor was filled with a faint smell of smoke.

“She’s not dead, she’s awake,” Lu Mingfei said softly.

“We’ve done everything we can. Just keeping her breathing takes up a lot of resources every day,” Lu Lincheng said. “She hasn’t been abandoned, simply because she is your mother.”

“If I don’t cooperate, she’ll be abandoned, right?”

“Anyone can be abandoned here, including me and the committee members. This haven exists for the continuation of humanity, not for the continuation of any particular individual.”

“You’re all a bunch of sons of bitches,” Lu Mingfei said. “This isn’t Eden, it’s just a big cage for raising guinea fowl, and everyone here is a guinea fowl waiting to be slaughtered.”

“Sometimes I feel that way too,” Lu Lincheng said. “But this secret can’t be told to all the guinea fowl, or they will lose their will to live.”

Dr. Duden and his team stood not far away, listening quietly to the father and son’s conversation. Their arguments could be described as extreme or insightful, but when the two talked about these things, their tone was as indifferent as if they were discussing the price of vegetables at the market today.

“The second condition is that no matter whether I come back alive or am physically destroyed, my mother will receive the best treatment,” Lu Mingfei said.

“Do you want us to sign an agreement? But what use is an agreement in a guinea fowl cage?”

“Your personal guarantee is enough,” Lu Mingfei said. “If the committee breaks its promise, you can just kill a few old guys to accompany me and my mother to our graves.”

“Do you have someone in mind?” Lu Lincheng asked. “I mean, who should I kill first?”

“Whatever, you decide.” Lu Mingfei paused. “My third condition is that I want to see that devil again.”

“Is it necessary? The real him is hidden deep within your consciousness, and you will soon see him. What we have captured is merely the shell that he has abandoned.”

“I want to say goodbye quietly, and once we are deep in our consciousness, he and I will became enemies.”
Lu Lincheng shrugged, looking completely different.

In the final sanctuary, amidst the pervasive mercury vapor, Lu Mingfei once again saw the demon bound between the bronze pillars. Looking through the rusty metal railings was like viewing an ancient Roman marble sculpture in a museum.

“You and him must have a lot in common, right? Experiencing life and death together, moments worth remembering,” Lu Lincheng said.

“Yes, so even though I know he’s a devil, I can’t bear to part with him, as if giving him up would be betrayal.”

“Humans are such strange creatures, so blind, and so easily seduced by gods or demons. In the Old Testament era, Moses forbade all believers to make idols in the Ten Commandments in the name of God. Worshiping any sculpture or image was considered a deviation from God’s will. Yet, in the New Testament era, Catholic priests still painted images of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child and hung them in the homes of believers for them to pray to day after day. Humans need idol worship, need to believe that something truly cares for them—whether it’s Jehovah, the Virgin Mary, or the devil, it doesn’t matter.

“Why would Mom like someone like you? You’re clearly cold-blooded and don’t believe in anything.” Mom’s stupid.

“How can you be so sure I’ll kill the devil deep within my consciousness? You can’t track my consciousness. What if I conspire with the devil to play you for fools?”

“I’m afraid you don’t have that deep a relationship of mutual trust with the devil. When he realizes that you want to get rid of him, his instinctive reaction is to get rid of you first,” Lu Lincheng said. “I guess he already knows that what you’re going to do is not a surprise attack. He’s hiding in your mind, waiting for you to kill him.”

Lu Mingfei suddenly remembered the young girl, who, in the “deep dream,” repeatedly killed her brother.
